The thread for which VC03 was finally banned, was in my opinion, due to the fact that his posts were deemed “inappropriate” or whatever. As I read the thread, I was disappointed in the way the mods handled it to the point where I commented. I don’t care enough to “lodge a complaint with the powers that be”. Seriously. I don’t want you to do that either. Let it go. I also think bbs2k was suspended because his opinions were unpopular. I happened to agree with his overall point in that thread, and it was annoying to see him suspended, ultimately for saying, “if you get a warning about something that you truly meant, take it like a man and don’t say sorry”. I agree with that sentiment. Will I get suspended for saying so? No. Because I don’t ding radars as a ‘contraversial poster’. One time a mod called Lobstermobster a troll for spewing some of her standard contraversy. Once a mod calls you a straight up troll, you can bet ya, there is a banning wand being loosened from its holster. If you press me for links on these, I will produce them. I hope you don’t.
As far as one claiming that one is an ex Seal is somehow disrespectful to real Seals, I say, get for real! Really. Be honest about the reason it is so important for the emotionally skeptical to get to the bottom of justanoldvet’s story. Because I can hardly believe that Navy Seals, Pilots, Brain Surgeons, Astronauts…I can hardly believe they are personally disrespected by thousands of poor ordinary schmucks out there attempting to grasp at some glory that they were never truly able to obtain for themselves.

You bring up an interesting point. Why ban people for trolling - they’re not actually hurting anybody. They’re just manipulating us for their own entertainment. Which, you could argue, is what somebody who comes here and posts wild tales is doing, too. But where’s the line? When does a well-told, amusing story become trolling?
ETA: I’m extrapolating from your post, not saying that you equated telling wild tales with trolling.
Sorry. I mean he was suspened. But still, my point holds. I don’t think he was trolling, and I think our penchant for screaming “troll” at every contraversial poster is giving some of the mods an itchy trigger finger.

I wholeheartedly agree with your first paragraph. I just don’t get the people who jump all over someone for being an attention whore, giving that person the attention they are accused of seeking and completely derailing threads over it.
But then you have to go and add the second paragraph. For one thing, it’s alrady been stated it was PM’s and emails that made him leave. For another thing, that is the kind of thing that’s been driving me nuts in this thread. Comments like, “yeah, we shouldn’t chase away so many newbies but hey, I was a little suspicious of him, too!” just aren’t necessary and only keep this train wreck careening down the track.
Oldvet’s not coming back and at this point I can’t say I blame him. I don’t know about you guys but to me this place seems to have slowed down lately, we need new blood. Let’s face it we’re a suspicious bunch and we tend to be suspicious of any new people or anyone with big claims. I hope that we can all just learn a little lesson from this and try to give people the benefit of the doubt until such time as we get more evidence that they don’t deserve it.

On the one hand we have the irrepressible Hardy Boys crowd, triggered this time by Guin but ably spurred to ever greater heights of self-important idiocy by the likes of Siege and others. Hunt-the-newbie is apparently our very favourite thing these days. Lord knows, embellishment can’t be tolerated, not on a messageboard devoted to [del]witch hunts[/del] fighting ignorance. And what’s more, suspicions should be voiced at the very first opportunity; keeping one’s powder dry is all very well, but if you wait for actual evidence, someone else might sneak in before you and get the credit for outing the n00b! Can’t have that, oh no.
Then on the other hand we have the tired old jackals feasting on last year’s snark, who apparently can’t wait to turn every thread they can into yet another episode of the unending cycle of who-lives-in-whose-basement, or who-took-what-meds-when. Never mind that there’s relevant stuff to talk about; what’s important is that we can drag up the oldest, most worn-out crap we possibly can in order to make the Other Place irrelevant because we’re plenty shitty enough to each other right here, thankyouverymuch. Oh, we were actually talking about something? Never mind, this is much more fun.
The ironic thing is that despite what irredeemable shits certain people are once they’ve got hold of the slightest morsel of personal information, we still apparently expect new posters to do everything save give us their Social Security number before we’ll take them at their word. There’s some people around here I wouldn’t give the time of day for fear they’d use it against me. Why anyone stays long enough to subscribe at the moment is an absolute mystery, it really is.

I have no life so I just read this entire thread from start to finish. 10/10. I haven’t seen a really good train wreck in awhile (which is one of the main draws of this board) and this one delivered on all fronts. I saw the set up coming and chortled with glee as Guinn pointed it out. The following cataclysm was beautiful. And now I learn there was some other train wreck I missed which involved a transsexual teacher troll. I’ll have to track that one down for later. Anyone have a handy link?
Still, I agree with those who said the unmasking was a little premature. Remember the good old days when there were dozens of trolls working at once, some with several thousand posts? Some were obvious and allowed to post due to their entertainment value while others worked under the radar to subtly subvert board morale. Those were the days. Now it’s more of a flash in the pan effect. I’m just waiting for the big reveal where Guinn is actually a shared account used by various SDMB staff.
I’m just glad I didn’t visit the hole in the ground which features those who snark before finding this thread because they would’ve spoiled the whole story arc.
marshmallow, if you like a good trolling, there’s a current MPSIMS thread that is IMO one of the most obvious examples of bullshit I’ve seen in a while, in which the distressed OP’er and his/her unbelievable situation is garnering much support from many well-meaning uncynical Dopers. I of course would not dream of linking it, since I can’t prove it’s complete horseshit, and I’d hate to be the big meanie who drives the widdle OP’er away, but PM me and I’ll send you the link.

I didn’t call her an Attention Whore in this thread. To the best of my recollection, I have never called her an AW and, in any event, I don’t think that she is one. The fact is, I didn’t call her any names at all in this particular thread.
One poster speculated that she led a sheltered life. I confirmed that speculation which is something that she readily acknowledges. I disputed a couple of points that she made. I agreed with a different poster that she is incapable of leaving a thread even though she said she was going to do so. This is something that she also readily acknowledged. That is my sum total in this thread.
