Hey vet. While you are consideringyour options, consider writing a letter/sending an e-mail to your local congresscritter. They have constituent services staff whose job is to respond to constituents’ questions/complaints.
Some local agencies tend to jup to pretty quickly when receiving a congressional inquiry.
I can totally believe that a small town police force can be corrupt, inefficient, and/or uncaring.
Years ago I was talking to someone who complained that her neighbor walked into her yard and shot her dog. When I asked if she called the police, she told me that he was the police.

I think part of the problem is that there have been at least two cases in the last couple of years where posters became popular and trusted, and then it turned out that they had built a false facade and it was all lies (the latest one being Gabriela). I think many posters were stung by having been played this way, and some barricades came up. But hey, this is the BBQ Pit, so as long as no one is actually accusing you of carnally abusing farm animals, I’d say you’ve been treated pretty gently. Must mean people like you!

I hadn’t heard about this before, but fascinated by your suggestion, I went and looked up posts by and about Gabriela. From this post, though, it appears to me that the consensus amongst those who would have reliable opinions on the matter is that gabriela was legit.

Oh. I somehow missed that thread. My bad. But I remember when I first joined there was the fiasco about the alleged transsexual teacher who got exposed for being full of shit and making everything up. I remember that in her case, she actually confessed when confronted with the inconsistencies in her story. A lot of people had invested emotion energy in her story and extended sympathy to her, so I know they felt used.
I may be wrong and I hope that I am. I think JAOV is gone for good. Im guessin that he’s the type who says what he means & vice-versa. This board isn’t for everyone.By that I mean around here (NOT JUST THE PIT) you have to put up with alot of shit or in my case just ignore alot of shit.
That’s pretty much it. It’s not personal, but after so many times of people giving these kinds of stories, you become somewhat cynical and suspicious.

I can understand needing a thick skin when you post here. I can understand people being skeptical. I can understand that this is the pit and people are usually a lot more ornery here but would it kill anyone if we just try giving people who seem pretty cool the benefit of the doubt?
I’ve always liked you and I think we’ve always been on good terms, so I’m not being a snot or anything. That said, I honestly don’t think **Guin ** has done any type of attention-whoring here. She expressed a perfectly reasonable thought she was having (something at least two other Dopers agreed with and which may or may not be true) and that was that.
You’re the one who keeps taking cheap shots at her and drawing attention to whatever squabble you guys are having. I get it- you don’t like her. That’s fine, but calling her an attention whore at every post she makes, especially valid ones, just sort of cheapens your points.
If you want to mix it up a bit, you could agree with the majority and we can call you a bandwagon jumper. Your choice

I lurked here a while, and I kind of like that it can get rough 'n tumble sometimes. I think I could hang here.
(It can get a bit clique-y, though. Don’t like the gang-ups. I think some members miss having at the truely-clueless that a pay-to-post board just can’t attract.)
Fact is, fake Navy Seals on the internet outnumber the real ones by probably about 1000-1. ANYTIME someone claims to be any kind of special forces on the internet, skepticism is to be expected.

Yeah, I guess I am somewhat jaded now. Reading the various crimes and about the people who committed them (and their childhoods) at Websleuths and various blogs, has done this with me. Maybe there is hope for the elder child, but I got the impression he was 16 or so? If he’s 12ish it is possible he might be helped as well, maybe. All the same, people like that do tend to respect those who won’t back down, who make them hold to the boundaries laid out…at least sometimes they do.
Well, that was $15 gone to waste, then. Who paid for that?
