OK, the joke was funny the first 500 times we heard it. It’s no longer funny.
You no longer have to do any rap covers and display how white and nerdy you are.
I’m talking to you Dynamite Hack, Baby Dayliner, Travis Morrison, and I think They Might Be Giants might have done it too. Ha ha. Joke’s over. It’s officially dinosaur turds. So stop it. Now.
BareNaked Ladies is a Canadian Nerdy White Guy Band and yet their concerts are famous for rapping. Venue-related, seasonal, tour city, whatever strikes them as funny gets rapped about. Good stuff.
What about Ben Kweller covering Vanilla Ice - white guy on white guy violence? For what it is worth, I actually do like his cover of Ice Ice Baby; nothing really funning about it. Just the hotness, fo sho.
I don’t think that’s what Knowed Out is saying. I think the whole “white boys can’t rap” thing is a belief held by those particular bands. They think, “We’re white and we play emo crap and we wear emo glasses and cry about how we can’t get girls. Lots of rap stars are black and they are smooth with the ladies. In other words, they are different from us. If we tried to be like them, it would be funny.” It’s not that Knowed Out thinks that only black people should rap, it’s that these bands think that only black people are able to rap well and that it’s funny when white people try to be black. And then they play the whole thing for laughs, as if they were so clever and self-aware and meta and everything. And it probably was funny the first few times, but now it’s annoying.
Um, I’m sure that was very creative writing and all, but exactly what bands are you talking about? Rehab, the Gourds, Hack and TMBG are emo crybabies? Are you fucking stoned?
No, but I wish I was. TMBG is the only band I was familiar with. And when I hear nerd in relation to music, I think “emo”. I was more interested in getting a point across than familiarizing myself with those bands’ entire oeuvre. So sue me.
Already in Use: …Simulpost? Not an actual reply? Yeah, that was creepy. And here I was feeling all affirmed and everything. They say that great minds think alike, but I don’t know what kind of minds think of Richard Cheese at the same time.
