ATTN: SETI@home Straight Dopers

And a lurker also contributed his 152 units to the common cause…

Way to go…

Welcome, Wonko! Nice to see another German in the group.

Hey, it seems that the data reduce a lot faster for me when the screen saver is not up than when it is. Is this just my imagination? If it’s not, will changing screen savers to something else fix the problem?

I’ve never noticed much difference, but you do have to have the SETI screen saver go blank to get the maximum performance.

Best set the ‘blank’ time to ‘0’.

If you want better performance, you shouldn’t use the screensaver at all. The command line client is much faster.
And if you want to use the screensaver program, set it to “run in the background”, the graphics eat more system resources than the actual data processing.

I should probably note that I’m running it in the background at all times, since all I ever use memory for is web browsing. And it seems that it runs more efficiently when I’m using my computer than when I’m away. Right now, my CPU usage is 100% with SETI@Home running, and 0-2% without it.

I’m glad this thread was bumped. I even started a thread some time before this looking to find out what had happened (I check MPSIMS so rarely)…

Well, back on the bandwagon now!

Welcome to all new and returning SETI@home Dopers.

There’s always a lag in fully updating the totals when people join the group who already have work units credited; by the time the totals are fully updated (probably sometime this weekend) we’ll probably have broken 18,000.

I’m joining the group - or at least trying to. I downloaded SETI about an hour ago and am running the commandline version. I’m able to log on to process units, but it still says “Unknown name/password” when I try to join the team. Perhaps some of their servers still aren’t updated. Well, when they are, I’ll be onboard with my Athlon XP 1800+. I also have two older computers. Perhaps I could hook them up to a network to crunch a few more units.

Gwa ha ha, turning off the screen saver really helped. I’m cranking them out about one every six hours now. Splendid!

neutron star, I’ll be interested in seeing how we compare timewise as I have the same processor. Neat. What’s your RAM? And what OS do you have? I’m running Win98 with 512 megs of DDR ram.

Next stop: world domination.

erislover, I just completed my first unit tonight while I was at work. SETISpy tells me that my processing rate is 3.45 hours per work unit. Looks like that’s holding true for the second unit as well, at it’s 66% complete after 2 hours and 15 minutes of processing. According to SETISpy, however, my CPU dedication is only 69.8%. Wonder if I could up that a bit by increasing the priority of the thread?

As for my specs, I’m running Windows 2000 Pro SP3 with 1024MB DDR RAM.

Unfortunately, the SETI page still tells me it doesn’t recognize my username when I try to join the Straight Dope group, even though I registered nine hours ago. :frowning:

Hmmm…when you try to join the group, are you entering the same e-mail address you signed up for SETI@home with? Or the problem might be with your password; you can have them e-mail you your password from this form to double-check that.

gasp Wow.

Well, I’ll be damned. They had assigned me a numerical password without telling me. It was never emailed to me or anything. I thought I had entered the same password I use for all of my insecure online passwords.

Oh, well. No biggie. Got the password and joined the team. Thanks for the tip, MEBuckner.

As of right now, SETISpy shows total CPU time of 14 hours. Four results retured, Avg. CPU Time 3:32:55.

So *erislover, how does your computer compare? Also, are you using the commandline or the screensaver version of SETI?

Hey, cool. I’m showing up on the team page. Why is my average time so low compared to everyone else? Several of you are running faster computers than mine, based on the posts in this thread. Are you running other things on your computer at the same time that would take away from SETI’s CPU time? So far, all of my SETI’s work has been done when I’m either just surfing the web and playing an MP3 now and then, or completely idle and not at the computer.

Will slower computers on your network drag the average down? I still have to buy a switch to network my slower computers, so I haven’t tried yet.

Oh, and erislover sorry for asking you a question that was easily answerable on the team web page. D’oh!

Our totals are once again up to date.

18,187 units! Woo-hoo!

Yea! I’m no longer tied for last!

I used to do this years ago, when I worked at a place that allowed it. But I sort of lost those work units (besides, they’re credited to the company team, I think), so I’ve just started again here at home.

I guess every little bit helps.
