Damn. It looks like my PC at work is hung. Hasen’t updated since the 13th! Argh!
I just rejoined, although I’m only adding 17 units. That ungodly processing time is what I got right before my old computer crashed, which is also when I dropped out for awhile. But even when it was working okay it still took about a week to finish a unit. I hope the new computer works a little faster!
 Wow, this sucker is flying! Woohoo!
Time for the weekly update. I pulled these numbers yesterday at about noon, using the SETI Team program.
Several new members joined during the week, and along with outstanding performance (you guys were out standing somewhere weren’t you?) by the existing members easily blew by my challenge of 17,500 units by the end of the week.
As of about noon yesterday we were at 18881 units.
Because I had no previous totals for the newcomers to use for comparison, the total for the week and the projected total for the end of the month are probably low. Just to have some numbers, for the newcomers I plugged in 10% of the total as the change for the week, with a max of 10 units. This probably shorts some (or most) of you a little, but we’ll have good numbers on you next week.
These are the standings as of yesterday, shown in order of total units:

And these are the standings shown in order or units processed during the week. Some of us who are newer and don’t have a huge number of total units show a bit higher on this list because we are cranking out more units per day.

Totals 18881 18174 707 20476
So there it is. The projection shows over 20,000 by year end. Lets try for 21k!
Ugly
RJKUgly, I’ve had time now to see how long it takes my new computer to process a unit - about 10 hours. I’ve been able to keep SETI running constantly in the background with no problems; if everything continues to go well I should have processed about 36 by the end of the month.
Cool! When I download the stats next weekend, I’m sure it will pick up the new higher rate and give a better prediction for year end.
In fact, I just checked the totals and you’ve gone from 17 to 19 units since yesterday, so your estimate looks dead on.
Keep up the good work!
Ugly
Woo Hoo! I’m number 8! Or number 30!
Err…
Huh.
I just rejoined the group and added my 693 processed units to the cause. Keep checking your rearview Colin W, I coming for you!!!
What do you mean it isn’t a contest?
Woo Hoo, new blood!
Keep 'em coming folks, and we may hit 22k by year end.
Ugly
I’ve added my 497 completed units to the group.
All right! It’s now officially a rush. We’re giving those evil deviationists at AFCA a real run for their money.
Welcome aboard Beelzebubba!

Don’t use the screensaver…it takes FOREVER. If you do use the screen saver, set it to go to black after a few minutes…it’ll cut processing time in half. I use the WinNT command line client on WinXP, with SETI Driver to cache work units (so I don’t need to do much). With that setup, I was taking about 14 hours per unit on my old PII-350. A PIII - 450 should do one in around 11 hours. My AthlonXP 1900+ takes about 3 hours and 50 minutes to do a unit.

Ahh, so that explains why it takes forever for me to finish work units, while my girlfriend skyrockets past me. Um, but is there a version of the command line client for Windows 98?
what? Hey, Win98 is stable! And I’m not gonna upgrade until I absolutely have to! <stamps foot>
Vengeant
According to the SETI command-line version download page, the WINNT version works on Windows NT, 2000, '98, and '95 (with Winsock 2 upgrade).
So far, I’ve completed 17 units, averaging 3 hours 45 minutes each on my Athlon XP 1800. I haven’t tried the screensaver version, so I’m not sure exactly how much slower it is.
Now that I finally have a computer with some decent power I signed up for Seti@home, and time wise I’m not doing too bad (eight hours on my first unit). I’ve been wanting to do this for years and this thread getting bumped reminded me of that.
But when I tried to sign up for the Straight Dopers I hit a snag. I honestly have no idea what my password is and for some reason even though I’ve requested it three times they still haven’t sent me an e-mail. I went to create/change login and it told me I was logged in as asylum60@hotmail.com, which is right, but when I tried to change the account it told me it had no record of my e-mail address. Anybody have an idea what I should do, or should I start over with a new account?
Asylum, I think you should wait a bit more. The Seti servers sometimes act a little strange. When I registered, I couldn’t join the team either. If it doesn’t work in one or two days, you probably should re-register.
I have joined and brought my paltry 16 units and my 9yr old son
I have a feeling we might end up with the embarrassing label of ‘slowest computer on the SDMB’ but, ah well, every bit helps I guess.
Well, you never know. The slowest computer could be the one that processes that one work unit with the Big Hello from the Galactic Federation (or the Ultimatum from the Evil Galactic Empire).
I had both of my machines turned off whiel I was away on vacation for two weeks. But they’re back up and running again 24x7 running the command line version. Only took four days to move back up to #5 again!!
13 days to go - can we actually make 20K??
Actually, we’ve already made 20K. If you add up the numbers (the easiest way to do this is to cut and paste them into a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel), you’ll see our total is already over 20,000, even though the “official” total right now is still only 18,something. I can manually update the totals and make the number increase somewhat, but because of something to do with how their server processes things, when new users join the group with existing work units, those numbers don’t get added to our total until the next weekend, when I guess they do some kind of great big global update.
I’m still not getting my password and I’m on my third unit. Maybe someone could go over to the SETI board and post my problem? I would, but you can’t post without your password.
