Aurora australis might be on show tonight

Aurora australis is the southern hemisphere’s equivalent of the northern lights (aurora borealis)

Bureau of Metrology has issued an alert that “A coronal mass ejection is expected to impact the Earth within the next 48 hours, possibly resulting in significant geomagnetic activity and visible auroras.”

Indications that the phenomenon might be seen as far north as Sydney (33∘52′) which is unusual but atm it looks like we will be clouded over here. oh dear, how sad, never mind. :sad_but_relieved_face:

My relos further south and outside built-up areas might get to see it much better.

Grey and cloudy here in Melbourne tonight too, at least where I live in the SE. Not that I’d see much beyond the light pollution.

It’s symmetric. Any storm which causes strong Northern Lights will cause strong Southern Lights, too, and vice-versa. So all of us Northerners should be on the lookout, too.

We were watching TV around 8:30 last night when my wife got a text from her daughter saying the Northern Lights were visible. (We’re in Kansas, it’s rare for us to see them.) So we hopped in the car and drove out in the county to get away from the city lights. I couldn’t see anything with the naked eye, but my phone camera could.

I wandered around in the cold last night looking for a place I could see to the north without everpresent street lights. This was the best I could capture

They made it down into South Carolina’s latitude again.
