Austin City Limits Festival 2007

They just posted the schedule, so now I’m way too exciting considering it’s still three months away.

So who’s going and what are you looking forward to seeing?

I’m a big Dylan fan and have never gotten a chance to see him live, so I’ll be at that one for sure. (Even though I heard he sucks live.)

I’m a bit upset that Yo La Tengo and the National are playing back-to-back, as I’ll have to miss at least one song on the walk from one stage to the other. But at least I’ll finally get to see YLT after their Stubb’s show got rained out a while back.

The Arcade Fire may have been the best set of ACL 2005. Unfortunately I think it will be about ten times more crowded this year, especially with the prime spot they have. Hopefully the White Stripes are still popular enough to draw some of the crowd away so I can get close enough to see.

You would have to pay me a lot of money to miss a Wilco show. I’m only pissed that they put three other bands I would like to see on opposite. Oh well, I’ll assume Patterson Hood solo is only half as good as the Drive-By Truckers, and Ziggy Marley isn’t any different than Damian or Stephen.

I love Spoon, but if I get to see them play a real show in Austin before then, I might check out Queens of the Stone Age instead. Because other than the new songs, I can predict the rest of their set list (The Way We Get By, Small Stakes, Sister Jack, I Summon You, The Beast and Dragon Adored, Lines In The Suit) and I’ve seen them play those songs a million times.

Other bands I like that I’ll probably see: Peter Bjorn and John, LCD Soundsystem, Stephen Marley, Steve Earle, Amy Winehouse, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Ben Kweller (hopefully he can make it through his whole set this time, he got a severe nosebleed last year and had to bail out), Lucinda Williams, and Ghostland Observatory.

Bands I like that I can’t see due to scheduling conflicts: My Morning Jacket (luckily I’ve seen them twice before or I’d be really mad), The Decemberists (not exactly a festival band anyway), Patterson Hood, The White Stripes.

Bands I’ll check out since nothing else good is on at the time: Blonde Redhead, Joss Stone, Bjork, Arctic Monkeys, Regina Spektor.

Mr. Lisa and I discussed going to see M.I.A. on Friday. I didn’t realize it was part of a festival, though, I thought it was a separate concert.

I saw this thread right as I’m about to buy a one-day pass, and I nearly choked when you said “nothing else good is on” during Arctic Monkeys…

all I can say is that I highly, highly recommend you check out Muse instead. Arctic Monkeys, if you ask me, is Jet rehashed. Comparatively, a big giant shrug. Muse… I have never heard anything else like their newest album.

Just a friendly recommendation.

Anyhow, I’m really excited about seeing Damien Rice, Amy Winehouse, and Muse. I wouldn’t mind seeing Arctic Monkeys, since (like Jet) they’re kind of fun brit-pop-rock, but since Muse is playing there’s no chance in hell I’m missing it.

I think I’m gonna check out Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, too, since I’ve never heard them and I wanna see what the fuss is about.

Slightly conflicted about Arcade Fire vs. White Stripes… I think I’d rather see Arcade Fire, but my girlfriend will probably drag me to White Stripes instead. Ah well. Good times shall be had.

Steel yourself. Although, when I saw him, I was really impressed with his guitar playing. His voice, however, was worse than I could have possibly imagined.

I’d skip The National and use that hour to get closer to the stage for Robert Earl Keen! Of course, I’m an REK Jr. junkie. ETA: but either way, I wouldn’t miss REK as he’s unbelievable live.

Totally agree re: Wilco. But I will mention in passing that, IMO, Ziggy is much better and much more talented than either Damien or Stephen.

I would probably skip Yo La Tengo, just because I like Ryan Shaw’s album, and I’d be interested to see if he’s any good live. Oh, and after Wilco, I would hit the Reverend Horton Heat before Dylan.

On Day 2, I wouldn’t miss The Soul Stirrers, Damien Rice, or Cross Canadian Ragweed.

A lot times bands will play venue shows at night while they are in town, so you may want to check to see if she’s doing that. I don’t see it on showlistaustin.com yet though. I know the White Stripes are playing a separate gig one night.

I did see Muse at last years ACL, I was impressed. I didn’t really know anything about them before, though I did recognize a couple songs. It wasn’t enough to turn me into a fan, but maybe I’ll see some of the show.

I’ve never been that into Robert Earl Keen. I caught a little of his set in 2005, then moved on to Lucinda Williams.

I don’t know anything about Damien Rice, but I hear his name a lot. Maybe I’ll check out some of his stuff.

I know this wasn’t directed at me, but thank you for this!! I’m hoping beyond all hopes that Spoon will turn up on there… I’ve only seen live them once before (at the last FunFunFunFest) and it was a singular experience.

I just got the album a few days ago; before that all I’d heard was their two big radio hits and I kinda liked 'em, but I all in all was about as enthused as you until I heard the rest. Crazy, gorgeous, wonderful album. As a bonus, they’re apparently known for putting on awesome shows.

Based on the other stuff you like, not sure if you’d dig him… he’s a very soft sort of mostly-acoustic indie folk. Songs of note include “The Blower’s Daughter”, “Delicate”, and “Woman Like a Man”. In fact, if you’ve seen the movie Closer, you’ve heard the first of those; it’s the song that plays at the very beginning and the end.

They have an instore gig at Waterloo Records on July 19. Hopefully I will be able to go.

Ack! Need tickets nowwwwwwwww

It’s a free show, you just have to get there before it fills up.

I’m not going, but if I did, I’d be pissed that Reverend Horton Heat was scheduled at the same time as the Decemberists. Totally different styles of music, surely totally different fanbases, but I love them both. I’ve seen the Rev live twice, and they put on one of the wildest, most high-energy stage shows I’ve ever seen. I’d gladly see them again, but I hear the Decemberists (who I haven’t seen live) are also awe-inspiring on stage.

Other than that, I’d definitely check out Amy Winehouse (she is amazing!), Asleep at the Wheel, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (not the most exciting live show, but top-notch musicians all), the Killers (especially because I can’t stand Bjork), Muse, the White Stripes, Regina Spektor, and My Morning Jacket.

LUCINDA WILLIAMS

I’ve been a fan since her first album (yes, big round black plastic thing) on Folkways.

She’s terrific live, too.

I’m all about Crowded House. Though I don’t want to get tickets now, as I have absolutely no idea what I’ll be up to when ACL rolls around. I might need to wait until I get to town in early August and then decide…
