I"m trying to remove a line from autoexec.bat, but when I reboot, the autoexec.bat file is restored to the way it was before I made the changes.
I’ve checked the registry and run HIjack This, but nothing seems to be running that would cause the file to be restored.
There’s a line in there that calls for the previous version of AVG to run at startup, but since I"ve upgraded to 7.0, I don’t want 6.0 to run at startup.
What’s causing this? This is in Win98. I"ve gotten used to XP, so I"m totally out of practice.
Why are you editing autoexec.bat to remove this? I haven’t done that since the bygone years of trying to squeak an extra kilobyte or two of memory to run Ultima 7 in DOS 6.0.
There are a few ways to remove a program from loading upon startup, but one would be to remove its entry via msconfig. Careful that you don’t do anything in there you don’t want to do…
Click ‘Start’, click ‘Run’, type ‘msconfig’. In the window that appears, click on the ‘Startup’ tab. This contains a list of all of the programs that Windows 9x/Me/2k/XP will load upon startup. Uncheck the box for AVG 6.0, click Ok, and you should be good.
If someone else has a easier or more reliable way to troubleshoot this, then I gracefully bow to their expertise.
