NHRA drag racing is sponsored by Mello Yello (now that Winston is out) and so, my wife and I succumbed to the advertising and decided that we needed to sample the stuff, and see if it is any good. Neither of us have ever had one.
It turns out, it isn’t available in anything under 2 litres in Arizona, at least as far as I can tell, and even then most places don’t carry it at all. No 20 or 16 oz bottles or 12 oz cans to be seen anywhere. Not in vending machines not convenience stores. Not in fountains. Nada.
The only place I found some was in a truck stop in Idaho during my eclipse trip. It seems amazing how impossible it is to get in AZ. Heck, we got Coke Zero Sugar pretty early. We even have Sprite Zero, which I didn’t even know existed. But no Mello Yello.
Is the stuff readily available everywhere? If not, why are they wasting so much money advertising something that you can’t get?
Distributor for coke products in Arizona shows they have Mello Yello. Check for their local office. Maybe they can point you to a customer that stocks the smooth stuff.
I usually have better luck finding the more niche products in the Coke or Pepsi families at WalMart. Was the only place to find Minute Maid Light lemonade 12 pack during my recent trip.
Oh, man, I loved Yoohoo back in the day. Haven’t seen it since my high school vending machine last in 1993. I had no idea it was still around.
Mello Yello I can find occasionally around here. It’s not ubiquitous in the way Moutain Dew is, though. I’d guess maybe one out of every four stores I visit might stock it?
Well, look at that! I was just in the shop to pick up some milk and turns out, they do have Yoohoo (though no Mello Yello). So I picked a bottle up (I think that was my problem–the Yoohoos I had gotten in high school were in cans, so I never looked in the refrigerated section where single bottles of beverages would be held.) Still tastes like I remember it – don’t know what’s so objectionable. It basically tastes like Ovaltine.
You mean, the way NASCAR uses Sunoco fuel even though there are no Sunoco stations anywhere near the west coast?
I am not sure if I have ever seen Mello Yello in California. It could be a somewhat regional thing; I remember being on travel once and seeing Dusty Rhodes do a TV commercial for the stuff.
Not quite the same. The better comparison is Monster Energy, the NASCAR series sponsor. MY is the NHRA series sponsor - aside from being the “Mello Yello Winner”, their logo is on the start line, billboards, programs, behind the winners when they are being interviewed, and a small decal on each car. They even have a cool commercial they run several times during the race. It’s impossible to miss.
Monster Energy drinks are everywhere, even out here away from NASCAR central. They have a whole section in the convenience stores.
But not MY. Though I’ll check the multi-machine next time I’m at our Burger King. They might have it.
