Avatars, comments thereon

I think I preferred “Classic Coriolanus” to what we might call “New Coke @Coriolanus”.

If anyone is curious, mine is a picture titled Total Outcast that portrays a planet orbiting an isolated red star in intergalactic space. The white dot in the upper left is a distant galaxy.

Glad you mentioned it, @Northern_Piper. The new @Coriolanus definitely gave me a start! :astonished:

Your bagpipe still looks like a hummingbird to me about 50% of the time.

I think it looks a little more like a mosquito.

My avatar is my current bird.

That’s pretty cool. My kid’s enthusiasm for space is rekindling my own fascination with it. It’s a big universe out there.

Mine is Futurama of course, courtesy of Amy Wong’s parents’ Buggalo ranch. I love those Buggalo.

I saw a Planet Express sticker on someone’s car today and thought, “Look, a fellow old person!”

Best smelling item out there.

LOL. I had made quite a number of comments over the years of when I both lived in NYC and read Spy, which mercilessly satiriized (poking fun is too light a phrase) Trump, the slumlord (even after getting investors to spend their money to buy The Plaza for him) and serial bankruptcy-type-guy who (and I knew a few) would not pay contractors (sue me, I’ll sue you, you’ll never work in NYC again).

I cannot find any similarities between the historical Gnaeus Marcius Coriolanus or Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, who is not entirely a like-able fellow yet is well respected; and Trump the guy born on third base who thinks he hit a triple and declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy six or seven times (depending) instead of Chapter 7 which would have depleted his funds and pseudo-billionaire claims entirely.

If fat-ass Trump isn’t offensive and the mods are okay, I’ll keep him (thanks go to Esquire as well who brought Spy back for some limited time years ago) till 2028 (if elections happen) or the Grim Reaper visits him and drags him to where Robert (not Bob) Marley is, whether that be sooner than 2028 or whenever he (i.e. never) relinquishes the White House.

I feel the need to point out two things people often get wrong about my avatar.

It is not ‘the back of some guy’s head’. It is a photo of me wearing my vermillion double breasted Virctorian laboratory smock. I feel the elaborate symbol on the back is striking.

I have a full head of hair. That is not a bald spot. It is a red satin yarmulke.

Agree that @Coriolanus has regressed. Given his explanation I understand. But aesthetically, major regression.

My look, OTOH, is the little black purple dress of avatars; simple, elegant, timeless.

Just for the record @Northern_Piper, I hate you so much for making me look at that image.

You owe me TWO buckets of brain bleach.

But yes, please @Coriolanus, bring back the Classic Formula once you’re done making a point. On behalf of all that is good and right in the world.

I love the image of Aku. Especially the way that rather than looking threatening and evil he looks annoyed and exasperated.

Fair enough. It might be Ralph Fiennes portraying him in the good 2011 film. I’m just not feeling Renaissance-ey at the current time.

I dodn’t mean it to be offensive (other than to one President) or be like Kurtz’s dying words in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darknes,

The horror! The horror!

I will change it up this Monday, March 17th, after a pint of Guinness.

:shamrock:

My avatar is a picture of me standing next to my 6 foot tall, winged box kite (that I made myself at the Washington State Kitemakers Conference.)

I say this sincerely and not snarkily- That is really cool!

You had me at “Rippington’s fan” yet I agree with Doc C, that is really cool!

Very few avatars bother me. I know @RivkahChaya changed her avatar because a lot of people complained (it was an eye, for those who don’t remember) but to me, any avatar is a good avatar if it is easy to remember and associate with a particular poster, and if it holds meaning to the individual using it (especially when they share with the board why they chose it).

For sure some avatars are easier to “read” than others - for example, I know what @DocCathode’s, @ParallelLines, and @Northern_Piper’s avatars really are, but that doesn’t stop me from registering them as the back of a bald guy’s head, two flames, and a mosquito/ hummingbird. But all three avatars are distinctive, and meaningful to the posters who use them, so it’s all good.

While the new @Coriolanus avatar is less aesthetically pleasing to me, it definitely passes the test of memorability, and they’ve explained their selection, so I’m good with it.

I have never been so grateful before that avatars are generally too small for me to see what they are unless I click on them (or, sometimes, even if I do.)

I’m mildly curious, @thorny_locust, why your avatar appears to be a strawberry. This one would match your board name, though it might not be as distinctive when avatar-sized:

I remember asking the mods to change my handle from Corbomite (a clasic Trek reference) and just to keep the first letter the same, thought of the not-too-comonly performed yet (at the time) recently released “Coriolanus” which while in modern-dress, was as bloody as the Shakespeare play (and followed the dialogue as well). So most pics were of a very bloody Ralph Fiennes, as was the style at the time if you were fighting for or against the Roman Empire.

I had a small can of Guinness and it’s only about 21 hours till St. Patrick’s when I certainly will have another Guinness and maybe some Jameson’s. :shamrock:

So here is Ralph Fiennes as Coriolanus, modern dress. This is the kind of guy who will be needed for a coup d’etat when Trump ignores any “War Powers Act” and Congress and the shit hits the fan. A Coriolanus would be the General you want for the inevitable Martial Law and hopeful restoration of The Constitution as we know it.

Which fits me quite well much of the time. Not threatening and evil, but absolutely annoyed and exasperated.

Or that maybe what I want you to think! -cue evil laughter-

And @CairoCarol, describing it as two flames isn’t exactly wrong either considering Aku’s origin images, and that the the flaming eyebrows are part of his key imagery. Better than being described as a campfire with burning logs as another poster originally did!
