They call it his “Radar Sense”, much like Spider-Man has a “Spidey Sense”.

I think when they were putting the show together, someone said (rightfully so) that the original idea was stupid and turned it into a sonar/echolocation thing.

Some comics I read had him being able to read and even discern color. In other words- not really blind.
