Average US male height

So there’s lots of sources that say that the average US male height is 5 foot 10 inches tall, assuming he hasn’t began to shrink yet. But I truly feel like the majority of them are taller than 5’10". Whenever I see a guy who is 5’10", he looks shorter to me than most guys that I see in public, and yes…I do live in the US. Oh, and I read a fact that says the average male shrinks half an inch each decade starting at age 40. That means the average male would only be 5’7" at age 100, 5’8" at 80, 5’9" at 60. I feel that most guys that old are still taller than that.

Reported.

For what?

Ignoring the Canadians?

Every American looks up to them. Kinda have to.

I am a true 6’1" tall male as confirmed by recent physical. I am 6’2" with shoes on. I am tall but not THAT tall. Trust me, the vast majority of men are much shorter than I am. I don’t even think the average is 5’10". It is closer to 5’9".

Men over 6 feet tall are reasonably uncommon in most areas of the U.S. but it differs by region. I look like a giant in the Boston area because I work with hundreds of people of Portuguese and Italian descent that tend to be on the short side. However, when I go Texas to visit half of my family, I blend right back in.

Height varies by ethnic group and time. The Dutch and Scandinavians tend to be really tall these days while southern Europeans and Asians tend to be shorter but individuals vary. Part of it is genetics but it also depends on childhood nutrition.

I can promise you though that most men are not over 5’10" unless you live in a cornfed area of the Midwest with a very high concentration of people of German or Scandinavian descent.

can confirm at least anecdotally- i’m 5’8" and i’m taller than quite a lot of guys i encounter daily.

I find that it’s quite common to overestimate average heights. The average height of an adult American man is 5’ 9.7", while the average height of an adult American woman is 5’ 3.8", according to one source I just checked. According to another one, it’s 5’ 9.0" for man and 5’ 3.5" for women. In any case, the average for men isn’t remotely 6’. There are several reasons that people overestimate heights. One is that actors and actresses in movies and TV shows are either tall or the scenes are manipulated to make them look taller than they actually are. A second reason is that because greater height makes people seem more powerful and popular, people overestimate heights.

Speaking from my own experience and observations, I agree with running coach.

While the OP’s name certainly has all of the characteristics of a spammer, the OP appears not to be a spammer. Thank you for the post report. We appreciate them, even if it turns out not to be what it seemed.

Welcome to the SDMB, Jsjdhrnv. Your user name appears to be a bunch of random letters with little rhyme or reason behind them (although you may have a reason for it). This is typical of spammers, and was what triggered the post report. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and we hope that you enjoy your time here on the SDMB.

6’2" with shoes, I don’t really feel tall. I know I am objectively tall but being an extra 3" bigger isn’t really noticeable (that’s what she said).

Possibly not but perhaps the post should be moved? There does not seem to be a question here, unless it is what is the average US male height, which the OP answers itself noting that a variety of sources concur on an answer. A comment that the poster’s personal experience is discordant with the factual answer? Maybe MPSIMS?

Now there could be an interesting GQ regarding the rate of height loss associated with aging and what factors into it …

I suspect that it is not completely linear and that it varies much between individuals based on many factors. My eldest son, for example, 31 years old, has already lost about an inch from his peak. I suspect that has more to do with the fact that his fitness/hobby interest is powerlifting and that he has squeezed his vertebral discs down some lifting so heavy. But I do not foresee him continuing to lose height at that rate.

In any case, presuming the op returns and is not a spammer, welcome vowelless one!

The average US male height is pulled down by those individuals at the short end of the range. The OP may be overlooking this impact.

And it’s pulled up by those at the tall end of the range. What does that have to do with anything? The OP’s problem is that he/she isn’t very good at estimating the average height of a group.

Shouldn’t a spammer at least offer to sell me some snake oil that will make me taller?

Or at least live streams to NBA games?

Yes, but there are more US males at the short end. The average US male is 20 inches at birth.

Yeah, but, like, leverage, man. It’s easier to pull things down than pull them up.

Or longer …

The running coach hypothesis being a spammer that ran out of time on the edit clock.
As to my own question about the rate of height loss

My sense is that the initial phase is caused by (typically gradual) shrinkage of the intervertebral discs, and that the latter accelerated phase is more driven by osteoporosis with microscopic vertebral fractures and kyphosis.
