Bad movies that you genuinely enjoy

Showgirls has too much nudity in it to be a really bad film. I suspect a lot of the animus toward it is like all the guys who have large porn caches in their computer but publicly their position on porn is that “it’s just awful, how can people like that stuff!”

Surely, I can’t be the only one that likes Men at Work, the 1990 comedy starring Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez as two garbage men who bumble into a toxic waste caper.

Granted I was a wee lad when I first saw it, but I caught it on cable a few years ago and it held up surprisingly well.

I don’t think so. I mean, you’d THINK that if straight guys loved that movie, it would have killed at the box office, instead of being a mega-flop.

If anything, I think it became a campy cult favorite of gay men.

It’s definitely a campy cult favorite of gay men, from what I’ve read on the Interwebs. But the nudity is mostly female, so straight guys are gonna like it. They just won’t want the sound on.

When I was in college back in 92-93 there was this one guy, Dave, who was really smart, really nice, and never spent a minute in class. He spent his entire Freshman year playing video games and watching movies. Mostly the same movies over and over. Way back then he pointed out that Men At Work was one of those rare movies that isn’t all that great the first time you watch it, but doesn’t get worse.
The first time you watch it , it is pretty funny, not roll on the floor hilarious, but pretty funny.
The second time you watch it, it is still pretty funny.
The tenth time you watch it, it is still pretty funny.
The 25th time, it is still pretty funny.

Most of the movies that are funny that many times are the genius ones like the Holy Grail, or Slap Shot, but it is one of the rare perma-oks

As far as the “spread” goes, not even close. We did a thread some time back on the biggest spread between critics & audience on RT. One (wish I could remember what it was) was 90%+ spread.

The Stupids is a great choice. I had no idea that was widely regarded as a terrible movie.

Nothing But Trouble is always my personal choice when this thread topic comes up. I even have it on DVD. I genuinely like it. I refuse to believe it is a bad movie. I think it’s hilarious. Yet I know that a lot of people hate, hate, hate it.

Billy Madison is a perfect comedy, IMHO. It deserves a 96% not a 46%. It’s also probably my most quoted movie.

My mom threw away my comics in 1970, my kids are grown up, I’m allergic to cats, and my files are backed up in the cloud. So it’s definitely my Lifeforce LP that gets saved.

Railsback did get top billing. Nobody ever mentions Firth because he manages to maintain his dignity throughout the film.

The Stupids has one of the most brilliant jokes I’ve ever seen in a movie: Tom Arnold starts the day by reviewing his “to-do” list. The first item on it is “Cross off first item on to-do list.” He says, “I don’t have time for that,” and crosses it out.

I need to go back and watch that movie again. I remember as a kid, we used to rent it occasionally from the local video store. I remember one day it was in the return basket and we asked them to check it in right away so we could rent it

I totally forgot about that joke, but yes, that’s a great one!

Just found The Stupids and watched it on Youtube. The whole movie was available. Guess nobody cares about copyright on that that one!

The scene with Cristopher Lee as the evil Sender (youtube link to this scene) is easily one of the funniest moments in movie history. I had forgotten just how good it really was.

Release the drive bee!

GI Joe: The Movie.

Not the live-action one, the cartoon. From 1987.

As far as I can tell, I’m the only person who liked—nay, loved—this one. Including it’s own writers.

1980s Reagan-American rah-rah technothriller action? Awesome. Versus Lovecraftian-Hyborean fantasy monstrosities? Awesome. The fact that they used a Japanese animation studio, with attendant art and directorial style, but with a motion picture budget? Superb!

I respected the extra blood, I loved the origin for Cobra Commander, I loved Lt. Falcon…occasionally getting his ass kicked, since he was a shrill, unlikable little shit. Hey, two outta three, right?

So, GI Joe: The Movie. It’s got one fan, at least.

Xanadu

Mommie Dearest

OC and Stiggs - Early 80’s teensploitation film that was based on a series of National Lampoon Magazine articles and really only notable for Being Directed by Robert Altman and the cast of “stars” including Tina Louise…

Howard the Duck

Ms Hook and I watched it when it came out. A very narrow window of opportunity as it turned out. We liked it. I wonder if we’d like it today?

I guess since I’m the one who brought it up as an example, I really should re-watch it and come back here and say whether I still enjoy it. Maybe I’ll check it out this weekend.

My favourite movie of all time is Slaves of New York. I’ve only met 2 people IRL who have heard of it and if I remember correctly it didn’t get good reviews in it’s day.

Ford Fairlane is a wonderfully funny movie (26% tomato rating). So quotable, overracted, excessive, and the very rare place where Andrew Clay could shine in a role. Wonderful supporting cast performances also.

Howling 3: The Marsupials. Audience rating is even lower than the critic rating! Tongue-in-cheek werewolf horror fun.

Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies - Bill Oberst, Jr., is outstanding as AL; you would swear his scenes were chopped out of a Ken Burns doco. For that matter, the entire cast gives it the old college try. Certain bits of history are twisted to fit the film. The ending is a hoot.

This is one of my favorites. I can probably quote the whole damn thing. Ron Liebman was fucking brilliant!
