I loved Duets. C’mon, it is a movie about karaoke starring Andre Braugher, Paul Giamatti and …wait for it…Huey Lewis. What is not to love?
Newsies and **Reign of Fire
**
Same here; I still love watching it, and am wondering why I don’t own it yet.
Well then, I see I’ve come to the right place!
You get to drink from the fire hose!
I own the DVD of Captain Ron, and I’m not (too) ashamed to admit it.
I LOVE Reign of Fire. Best dragon movie since Dragonslayer.
100% correct.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. 68% positive at Rotten Tomatoes, but many of the positive reviews mention how bad it is. I’ve always loved this movie.
Someone else mentioned The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. I’m one of the few people I know who liked 1991’s Boris and Natasha, (35%) with SCTV’s Dave Thomas as Boris and Sally Kellerman as Natasha. (And a cameo by June Foray!)
I’ve got to go with two favourites:
-
Dumb and Dumber. I hate Farelly Brothers movies, but not this one. The script just works, and Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are a hysterical team. “Big Gulps, huh? Well, see ya later!”
-
Happy Gilmore. Maybe this doesn’t count as badly reviewed, but most Adam Sandler movies suck so I’m assuming it was. Again, a movie of a type - the Adam Sandler vehicle - I usually despise, and yet this movie just never gets old for me. It’s funny and madcap and basically Adam Sandler being a violent idiot, but it has a gentle, good-natured approach his other movies don’t. I’m in good company here; Viggo Mortensen has frequently cited this as his favourite movie and said he and his family will watch it “Any day, any time.”
I brought Run Lola Run up as my “acceptable” (read: “critically acclaimed”) favorite movie, as opposed to my sentimental favorite movie, Tron, which had been getting trashed in the run-up to the sequel. I think people just saw my mention and ran with it; I didn’t mean to imply that it’s a bad movie at all.
When it first came out, John Carpenter’s The Thing got a lot of reviews that were nothing short of poisonous.
The movie was despised by many reviewers.
I’ve seen it at least a dozen times.
Yup!
Bingo. Usually I agree with critics, but Newsies is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, my DVD appears to be broken (at least, it doesn’t work on my DVD player), so I’ll have to buy a new one at some point. At least I still have it on VHS.
Already mentioned: Pitch Black, Constantine, Hudson Hawk, Starship Troopers, Caligula, Stargate, Point Break, Twins, Waterworld, Tremors (all of them), Dude Where’s Your Car, Blue Velvet, Not Another Teen Movie, Logans Run, The Fifth Element, UHF, David Lynch’s Dune, The Thing,
Not yet mentioned: Eurotrip, D.E.B.S., Critters, Return of the Killer Tomatoes.
Very recently, MegaShark vs Crocosaurus was much more fun than it had any right to be.
Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle was hysterical. Unfortunately, the sequel, Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, sucked donkey balls.
Nah, they were both lots of fun.
ETA: Alien Raiders, Nightbreed, Battle Beyond the Stars, Lord of Illusions.
I thought Tommy Boy was slow cheesy…and I still think that…despite the fact that one scene* caused me to laugh harder than at any other time I can remember, period. On and on I laughed, guffawed, choked, wheezed, snorted, and brayed, until I was red from lack of air and sank off the couch to the floor. My wife eventually thought she might have to call an ambulance. I hurt afterward for hours.
So I guess I have to give the film some credit as a comedy, eh?
Big fan of Joe vs the Volcano. I’ve always been sort-of interested in Costner’s The Postman, but never seen it…after the comments here, I guess I should.
*which scene, you wonder?
The scene with the old-style pneumatic tube office mailing system.
Agreed. One of John Hughes’ overlooked gems (he wrote the screenplay).
I’m sorry, I think you meant to say “UHF is a great movie spoiled only by the greatness of Weird Al and the greatness of Spatula World and more greatness stacked upon the greatness that is Michael Richards. And his mop.”
And another vote for RAT RACE!
I’ve told serious literate friends they HAVE to rent/buy/watch this movie. I’ve bought multiple DVDs and given them to people. Even bought one for our church, after the youth group watched the copy I’d left there… for the tenth time.
Holy crap, Dutch is one of my favorite movies! I’m glad to finally meet the other person who actually watched it.
Also, mad props for Joe vs. the Volcano, Kindergarten Cop, and David Lynch’s original Dune.
