My apologies then (of the non fucking kind). For a moment it seemed like you responded to a call on dubious moderation with a quote of the rules of “Please remember that you are our guest here, and that we reserve the right to exclude you at our whim, for any or no reason whatsoever.”.
Only if you promise to post pictures (break the link, of course)
No need to beg forgiveness or even acknowledge mistake (although those are always welcome when they come sincerely from the offending party. No need to involve the whole staff). Just not rushing the scene in full riot gear and gassing the mob would have been enough. It doesn’t have to be slinking away but walking away with dignity. Reminding us that you hold the right to kill or let live at your mercy and handing out random warnings, not so much.
Come on, everybody, can we have a little more discussion and a little less pot-n-kettleing?
I imagine that the owning up didn’t come until the incident was discussed in detail. Some Mods may have been unhappy at having to rescind the warning, but they did it anyway. So good on them.
Hopefully, Colibri’s latest bad mood is likewise being discussed and will result in a similar resolution.
If it is ever going to happen, it has to come from the mods’ side. Not because the onus is on you, which it isn’t, but just for practical reasons. You are a smaller group and you do communicate with each other and are better able to act in unison. The other side is not even really a side. Just a loose bunch of random strangers that agree with each other in some things and bicker on just as many others.
You can break the cycle. Waiting for it to sort itself out is like waiting on frogs to grow hair (that’s Venezuelan for when pigs fly).
Plus, the fact that this so called horde drops in does not mean that the legitimate complaint is now without merit. Do the paramedics stop picking up the injured because a circle of rubberneckers gathers?
You handle the complaint in its own merit and you do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. So what if the horde celebrates or howls at your decision? That’s their business. If their celebration or outrage at your decision breaks the rules, then you deal with that as a separate matter but you don’t let that influence your judgement on the first matter.
Not doing the right thing to rob the trolls of the victory dance is letting them call the shots. Then the terrorists won, so to speak.
This thread is embarrassing. Seriously, are the mods participating here deliberately trying to lose all their goodwill and credibility in one fell swoop? Cause if so, well done.
Otherwise I suggest you shut this before you dig that hole any deeper.
No, I do not see how it reflects on all dopers, since the specific statement was in regard to the small group of chronic complainers acting in concert. Nothing I have posted, here, can be reasonably read to mean that all posters are included in my comments.
I tend to agree with your overall point and have taken that position in staff discussions.
The problem, there, is that we are a small group, as you note, which means that we wind up taking shit from a much larger group. If we were to back off, there is no indication that the complainers will behave any more civilly unless they come under pressure from their peers to dial it back, so taking the high road begins to look to some staffers like painting targets on their foreheads.
Seeing some actual support from the TM would go a way toward getting notion that we are only here for the abuse out of the way.
I want to see both sides ratchet back the hostility, but any call that only one side is responsible for that hostility will do nothing to encourage that side to do so.
I do not expect any poster to jump in and defend any Mod on any given topic. On the other hand, when the complainers begin dragging up unrelated incidents and ancient history in every challenge thread, it would be nice to see a few posters telling them to stop the hijack, (because you know darned well that if a staff member tells them to stay on topic, there will immediately be cries of "Come and see the violence inherent in the system. ").
You know, I’m kind of offended at being called a chronic complainer acting in concert. I’m not working with anyone, and I don’t normally do this. That’s kind of an attack on my character.
He attacked her POST, not her. He spoke of her “fucking apology” (her post), the fact that it took so “fucking long” (a duration != a poster) and her “fucking weekend” (again, duration of time =! the poster). It has always been the rule that it’s ok to attack/insult the post but not the poster (except sometimes in The Pit, depending on what iteration of Ed’s rules are in effect)
Your idiotic warning (note…your “warning” is your post, not you. Thus this is allowed) directly contradicts a fairly recent mod ruling from Dex.
ACCEPTABLE=thanks for your fucking apology
NOT ACCEPTABLE=You are a fucker for that apology
See the difference?
So, I hope to see a retraction of this bogus, stupid fucking warning. (note "bogus, fucking stupid warning != personal insult. I’m attacking the post.)
Do you see any post of mine claiming that only chronic complainers have posted, here?
I see both concerned posters and chronic complainers in this thread. I have no interest in attacking individual posters for their general behavior and no desire to start one more flame war over who might or might not be chronic complainers.
I have responded civilly to several posters and engaged them in discussion. Sapo wants the Mods to back off the hostility, but I see several of you taking offense where none has been offered, even taking jabs at me for things I have not said when I have been civil in all my exchanges. If we’re going to be punished even when we are being civil, we probably have less incentive to be civil more often.
