Band Names

I am sure people have had a topic about this before, but what are some of the strangest band names you have actually heard of?

Mine would have to be the Squirrel Nut Zippers

This link is fun, was posted here before.

i think a squirrel nut zipper is actually some kind of 1910’s snack food or something to that effect… trivial pursuit. i can’t say for sure though.

I think Toad the Wet Sprocket has to rank as one of the most unusual ones I have seen.

In Germany there is a band/comedy outfit called “U-Bahn-Kontrollöre in tiefgefrorenen Frauenkleidern”. Although it does not really roll off the tongue, it is quite weird. It means “Subway ticketmen in deep-frozen womens’ clothing”

The Amazing Stroopwafels

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. They specialize in punk rock covers of light rock like Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Elton John, etc.

Here’s a bunch of them from a book I have called The Odd Index by Stephen J. Spignesi:

Enjoy! Only you alone can decide whether they make your personal “cool” list or not!

I was in an all-girl riot grrrl/punk band for a while, a year or two ago which was called “69 Girly Points”.

The name came about when I and my ex-band mates were at school. I’m very tomboyish and so were they, and everytime they did something girly, I’d say “2 Girly Points for you” and so forth.

“Veruca Salt” always struck me as pretty weird

Demonspawn-
Have you seen WIlly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

There was a rapper in the early- to mid-'90s by the name of M.C. 900-Foot Jesus. I thought that was pretty odd.

One of my favorite local bands goes by the name Thoughts of Ionesco. I saw a band a few years ago from Chicago called Blue Genius. That’s all I can think of for now.

-Dirty

Flamsterette_X, I just wanted to say I own almost every disc on that list, and you have great taste in music!

Dont forget Bolt Thrower though hehe

I saw MC - 900 ft Jesus a few times; his name came from an actual sermon from one of the notable televangelists of that era, though I can’t remember which one ("and a 900 foot Jesus appeared to me…)

Flamsterette-X took most of mine. Interesting and very comprehensive list, I might add. The only time I’ve seen Dog-Faced Hermans included, which was also one of my favorite bands. I also counted and realized that I personally own 58 of the bands listed. So, you really do have good taste!

One of my all-time favorites is never mentioned: Steel Pole Bath Tub

And in spite of their music, who can forget Ned’s Atomic Dustbin?

Only a matter of time before someone mentions …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.

Some others I own:
**

John Cougar Concentration Camp

Spahn Ranch

Brian Jonestown Massacre

Fragile Porcelin Mice

Penis Basket

Free Beer and Chicken

Day Glow Abortions

Genuine Beaver Saddle

!!!

Dismemberment Plan

the All-Scars

the Fuckers

Blood-Thirsty Butchers**

G-String Eyepatch
Genitortorers
Idiot
Toxic Field Mice
Wargasm

Oral Roberts. Apparently from a sermon about his wandering and hallucinating in the desert.

They are unusual.

Weird. I’m borrowing this band’s CD from my bandmate, but haven’t gotten to listen to it yet. Must do that soon. There’s lots of cool shit happening in Japan. You should definitely check out a band called There is a Light that Never Goes Out (not a Smiths cover band). You should also check out my bands, urigagarn and Ayumi Hamasaki. Er…when we put out some music, that is.

More Japanese names:

Bump of Chicken

Thee Michelle Gunn Elephant

Both are quite popular over here.

Toad the Wet Sprocket is from an old Monty Python sketch made up of a fake “music news” report, where all the band names were utterly ridiculous.

Well, Flamsterette_X, I should probably point out that Bitch Magnet was founded on my very own college campus while I was there. Saw them a few times; they played several dorm parties, including mine when I was a sophomore. Wasn’t real into them then, but that was before I made my transition to the punk rock Dark Side.

Oh, and it’s “My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult”.

And let’s not forget:

Drive Like Jehu
Nitzer Ebb
Mother Love Bone
Ned’s Atomic Dustbin
7 Year Bitch

PS–Agent Orange rocks!

There’s a local band in London called “Ken Dodd’s Dad’s dog’s dead”

“Queens of the Stone Age” always struck me as odd, as does “Neutral Milk Hotel”.

But for comedy value my favourites would be “Gaye Bykers on Acid” or “Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts”.

Nope, but they sound like fun.

Mmmh, chocolate

Kyomara,

I only have the Blood-Thirsty Butchers split 7" that they did with Rocket From The Crypt, but I like it. Let me know what you think of the CD

Indeed, Japan has some of the most bizarre music and band names around. There’s just a whole different level of freaky-ness happening, and I haven’t seem it’s equivalent in US music. Just off the top of my head;
Boredoms
Merzbow
Melt Banana
