The Beatles is the only correct answer.
I wore out on classic rock a loooooong time ago, when my husband felt that the same 40 songs was all anyone would ever need. However, it took longer than for most because I grew up without it. So, I had to listen to a lot to get my fill first, and to groove to plenty from my favorite band at the time… Aerosmith. Now, I recognized the misogyny inherit in most of the songs, but figured (hoped?) they were mostly in jest. But having a steady diet of women being treated like chattel began to bug me. Then Steven seemed to start losing it a bit, and ended up on American Idol. I mean, what the hell? Then I was over them, just like that. I can’t think of a single song that I’d be thrilled to hear at moment, and the other day, “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” almost had me hack up a hairball. Ugh.
I’m also pretty tired of Journey too. All of classic rock radio needs to be overhauled.
I near about break a finger changing the station sometimes. Worst offenders off the top of my head: Heart, The Moody Blues, Cheap Trick, The Cars, The Pretenders.
I put all of these (and many songs by many others) into a mental category called “Chewed Gum”.
AC-DC Aerosmith Van Halen
I would add Stevie Wonder but I was sick of him the first time I heard one of his songs
Boston–it was gradual. 3rd stage came out and it was nice enough for a month or so before it went cold. Shortly after that I couldn’t listen to Don’t Look Back. And then Boston started to feel too saccharine.
Doors
The Who–this is a bit of a heartbreaker, and does not include Quadrophenia which I am increasingly of the opinion was an accidental masterpiece.
**VanHalen **(with Roth. Never could listen to the Hagar reboot)
One thing I’ve recently discovered is if you can mentally tune out the vocals, all of the above (with the exception of Boston’s second two attempts) become really enjoyable simply as instrumentals.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Billy Joel. Make the mistake of listening to classic rock radio for a whole day and you’ll hear the same 4 songs over and over again.
Anything off of Who’s Next. Please, just make it stop.
Post 19.
<cntl> F is your friend.
The problem with classic rock stations isn’t the artists who get played, it’s that they all play the same damned 5 songs from all the same artists. I love classic rock, but cannot listen to classic rock radio.
There’s absolutely no reason why they can’t just go a little bit deeper into the album and play something different for a change.
That is the problem. I guess the idea is to appeal to the masses: the people who put the radio on and don’t really care if they hear the same songs over, and over, and over.
Ronnie Wood has a really good radio show where he plays anything and everything he wants, and it’s magical. He will bounce from Motown to old blues, and from Elvis to The Kinks and everything in between and will play stuff you never hear on the radio, and yes, occasionally something he enjoys that you do hear on the radio, but it’s like the old commercial about “Bits and Bites,” every handful is different, and you never know what you’ll get.
ETA: That’s what I would like in a radio station: Surprise me!
SirusXM has the Deep Tracks, which addresses this problem – album cuts you don’t hear too often. Tom Petty also does a show for them, and while I’ve never been a fan of Petty, his musical taste is impeccable.
Both our classic rock stations overplay AC/DC and Aerosmith, but honestly I never was much of a fan. I could tolerate them back in the day though. Now of course I have the skip option instead of just turning the old transistor knob down and waiting.
Sirus is $25 a month here. Damn. Even if my car had the capability, I’m not paying $25 a month for radio in a car.
I know this thread is a bit stale, but so is the band I HATE with the black hot burning flames of…of…dammit, I can’t think of anything that bad.
rolling stones, should have called themselves Satan’s Flaming Hemorrhoids except I don’t consider them to be talented enough to achieve such a high level of regard. Talentless Hacks (as a group) and Mick Jagger’s caterwauling screeching is not singing! Says something bad about the state of western civilization at the very least if not humanity in general that they could be so successful and generally thought of as “good”
Almost all of’em except the Beatles (plus a smattering of grind/deathmetal bands and late 80s/early 90’s indie noise rock bands)
Slight thread detour (and thanks for the link in my own thread): Ca. 1990, I dated a man who owned a used record store. There were 4 artists whose albums (in whatever format) they couldn’t give away.
They were:
Asia
Twisted Sister
Huey Lewis & The News
and
Bob Seger
In short, everyone who wanted albums by them already had them.
I don’t even bother to turn on my car radio most of the time. Curse of living in a smallish city. Get in car, turn on radio just in time to hear the end of a song and the start of a commercial break, arrive at destination by the end of the commercial break in time to hear the next song starting, but have to get out of the car now.
That would also make it pointless to have Sirius.
The Beatles, despite not being my favorite band, are probably one of the few I could never get sick of. However, I think it may be the most correct answer due to their universal appeal.
I just get sick of words at points as 80% of the time I listen to music for the poetry of the lyrics, pleasure to the ears not withstanding (Swans/Death Grips/Antlers/NMH/Brand New/dare I say, punk)
20% of the time I just want to listen to Cliffs of Dover or classical or jazz.
Wowee! You’re better off paying $10 per month for Spotify Premium, which also has an offline feature, so you can listen to your playlists without a 3G or 4G connection.
As for artists that I’ve grown sick of? Definitely Take That. Definitely Wham, and Backstreet Boys. And certainly James Blunt!
I’ll update this when I can think of any more artists I have either got bored of, or despise completely.
