I find it very hard to find any new music that I enjoy but I love almost all the songs by this band. Can anyone recommend me anything similar?
Yes, they do like the ting tings don’t they? But not as much as they like the boom booms and twang twangs.
That’s Not My Name is addictive, for sure: The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name (Official Video) - YouTube we played the bits off that in the car.
What do you like about them?
Here are some bands that I think have a similar sound to various degrees:
The Black Keys
Chairlift
Feist
Florence + The Machine
Metric
MGMT
Modest Mouse
Phoenix
The Temper Trap
Klaxons
Vampire Weekend
The Virgins
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I would broadly describe their music as "mid 2000s indie garage rock.
I’m more of a chunk chunk fan, but I’ll tolerate the tar tar sound.
ive only heard/seen one tings-tings song and that was a weird way of singing happy birthday on a preschool show and the chick was to me so obliviously high as a kite … they didn’t to many close ups …
Man, that song is like drugs. I first heard it while walking down a street in Chicago, and it was playing out of the doorway of some place. I stood there and memorized what I could of the lyrics before the end so I could Google it when I got back to the hotel. I personally prefer the alternate video, but it’s the same song.
But yeah, there’s quite a few angles to what you might like about The Ting Tings, more guidance might be helpful.
I really think the SDMB may have gotten another “one and done” badge with the Yeah Yeah Yeas. But, if you liked the fact that it’s rhythm focused and features female vocals, and I just extrapolate, you might like {ok, spoilered because I wouldn’t want to open them at work these days, I apparently like songs with naughty words)
Cibo Matto :Birthday Cake
Peaches : Fuck the Pain Away - Live recording, first and only take, in front of an audience. I am forever in love with this.
Or, you know, MIA: Paper Planes, or Born Free, depending on how harsh and big you want to get with the sound.
Now, I wouldn’t consider those examples necessarily even in the same ballpark as each other. The Ting Tings didn’t all sound exactly like “That’s Not My Name”, either. But those were the first things that popped into my head when I thought about songs similar to that, if I excluded The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
And now the words “ting” and “yeah” have completely lost all meaning to me for a few minutes.
For the other extreme end of what might sound like The Ting Tings’ other songs (hey, no spoilers needed! I like hoo-man songs, too!):
The Primitives: Crash (eww 80’s drums! I still like it.)
Fleetwood Mac: Tusk (ok, I’m still fixated on it being heavy on rhythm).
Yo Gabba Gabba, right? Either they played “That’s not my name”, too, or it was just completely inescapable (for me) around that same time. “Weird way” and seemed “high as a kite” were the features of that show, btw.
I love Crash by The Primitives.
For an addictive dance track with a Girl Power vibe, I’d go with Don’t Call Me Baby by Aussie group Madison Avenue: - YouTube
I had some Ting Tings tracks on my amazon/spotify accounts and a random walk through similar artists led me to
Chvrches Editors
Empire of the Sun
Future Islands
Grimes
guided by voices
The Naked and Famous
Silversun Pickups (never seen that video before, rather sweet I think)
Sleaford Mods
How the hell their algorithms got me to all those from the Ting Tings I don’t know but I confess there were some good suggestions there for my tastes. YMMV of course.
Ten Thing has a similar name.
Grimes and Chvrches are what I originally thought when I saw the thread title, so I think your accounts led you properly.
Given that The Primitives have been invoked, here’s their best tune
Here’s The Shop Assistants
(I accept these are moving away from The Ting Tings)Seconding Grimes and suggesting Le Tigre, Bis, and Enon.
heres the video were discussing
I’m OK with jing-tinglers tied onto their heels, the floo-floobers, the tah-tinkers, the hoo-hoobers, the gah-ginkers, the trum-tookers, and the sloo-slonkers, but not so much the ear-splitting noises de-luxe on their great big electro hoo-cardio shnoox.
