Bang, Zoom: Help me get rid of Norton.

Norton Protection Center: I don’t want you, don’t need you, and I will darn well never subscribe/ re-subscribe to you. I have enough other programs in place protecting my PC that I’m about as ‘dangerously unprotected’ as Dubbya in Crawford.

Get Thee Gone, Satanic Undead Anti-Virus Protection…!

Simple. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

Unfortunately, that might not be enough, Symantec uninstaller may not finish the job.

Before you attempt to remove Norton, back up your entire hard drive.

Trust me on this.

Duckster,

Really???

“Sour grapes” for not wanting Norton’s protection anymore? How can we prove this and file suit?

Q

Norton has become the virus that they promised to protect us from.

Norton/Symentec is evil. Don’t touch anything having to do with them. Stay away.

Best solution I’ve found is a reformat and reinstall. If it’s been a couple years since the last time you installed the OS, it’s probably worth it. A nice clean install can get rid of other problems you may have noticed from time to time as well.

I’m for format and reinstall Windows … never found a way to completely remove all the junk Norton puts on a system.

I feel your pain! I got rid of it long ago.

Before taking the reformat trail, try one last thing. Download and install the free program called Revo Uninstaller. It really is great.

After uninstalling the program, it then searches your entire drive for any mention of the program and lets you delete all that. Then it does a similar scan of the Registry and gets rid of all that junk. This is really helpful, as Norton (and MacAfee) insinuate themselves all through your computer and the Registry.

Once you get rid of it by hook or by crook, think about getting the free Avast! or AVG antivirus programs. Both work very well. I got Avast some time ago, and it worked so well, bought the pro version that lets you tweak more settings. Small, clean and easy to use.

Good luck.

I installed AVG on my sister’s computer two years ago. She had some completely unrelated problem, took her computer to a repair shop, and they sold her that thrice-cursed Norton abortion. Now her computer is more screwed up than it was before and I simply don’t know enough to completely remove Norton. And I ain’t gonna try.

Ooh boy, this thread is making me worried. For Christmas I got a netbook… Windows XP with Norton pre-loaded. I’ve never used Norton before. The free trial period is almost up. So far I’ve had no problems with it. What am I in for, if I keep the Norton? It almost sounds like damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

Online Armour firewall, Avast for antivirus and Malwarebytes for malware/spyware. All free versions, are great and easy to use. Try download.com for them.

I went with the AVG package for 2 years. They’ve been good for me so far.

They used to be totally free, but now you just get the 30 day trial.

So I want to ask again: Is there anything written on the net about Norton and their cheesy way of doing business?

Thanks

Q

I ended up reformatting the entire hard drive and reinstalling all applications. Norton is like kudzu.

AVG is still free. You just have to look hard to find the free link.

Or know someone with the linky! (Which eventually leads here.)

I switched to Avast!, just 'cause it has a “scan on boot-up” before Windows loads, slightly hidden in the menu. AVG used to at least scan the memory on boot-up many versions ago, unless they’ve just hidden the boot scans really well?
