Bangs Bashing

Over the course of years, on multiple occasions, I’ve heard woman A say she “hates” woman B because she wears her hair in bangs. And I don’t get it, I look over at woman B and her hairstyle looks nice in my opinion. But I’m a guy and I’m probably missing something. If there are any bangs haters out there can you tell me why?

Since the OP is looking for opinions, let’s move this to IMHO.

Are you sure she’s saying she hates* woman B* and not woman B’s bangs? I hate straight across the forhead Alice in Wonderland style bangs with a burning passion but I would never hold it against someone who wore their hair that way. So in answer, yes it is entirely possible to hate a physical trait or style unconditionally but to hate the owner of said style is just psycho.

But what is it about the bangs you hate?

On “New Girl,” Jess and Cece both look great with bangs. I was disappointed when they both started wearing (slightly) different hairstyles.

I’ve never heard anybody comment on anyone’s bangs. I never liked what were referred to as Mamie Eisenhower bangs, and my mother really didn’t like my long bangs in the Sixties (well, I guess I’ve heard one person comment on bangs), but other than that, I don’t know anybody who cares.

I’ve heard the opposite: That bangs make one look less “severe”. I suppose that conversely, not having bangs could make one seem more “serious”.

They don’t bother me. Betty Page was famous for her bangs, I never heard any guys complaining about it. Can’t tell you what women may think about it.

Back in the early 2000s I had short very wavy hair and it was cut with bangs but the way my hair is I could also wear my hair sort of combed back from my face. I never noticed anybody with something against me or my bangs - I actually kept getting compliments on it and was considering getting it cut that way again.

Sometimes I like the look of bangs on a woman, but I also know that it is one of the easiest-yet-most-realistic-looking wigs for women to [del]jam their real hair up under[/del] wear.

Q: Is your friend too much of a lady that she’ll say “I hate her bangs” when what she really wants to say is, “She’s wearing a Wig you Dope! WTF is Wrong with you that you can’t see it…?”

I just think they’re unflattering and juvenile looking. And I am thinking about a specific style, speaking of Ms. Deschanel. Actually, I think I have to admit that my irrational hatred of Dakota Johnson might actually be (in part anyway) due to her dumbass bangs.

I adore them! I know people who wear them very effectively.

Alice in Wonderland (Tenniel) is cuter than anything!

WOOKINPANUB says they’re “juvenile looking,” and I would agree, but would change the phrasing to “they make the wearer look young.” This isn’t a bad thing!

(Bangs can give the top of the head a set of “scarab beetle” part lines, which are kind of distracting. But an “Alice Band” does a lot to hide this.)

Meh: it’s a style, like many others. My mother used to put her hair up in curlers, and I never saw the damn point. Curly hair seems like far more trouble than it’s worth. Let it fall straight, if nature intended that.

Bangs don’t bother me. When I wanted to grow them out, that bothered me. I eventually gave up.

I’ve always had bangs. Now that I’m in my forties, they cover the wrinkles on my forehead, so I’m keeping them.

Possibly you mean Betty Page? Alice doesn’t have bangs, not in the Disney movie, not in the recent live action movie, and not in the Tenniel drawings.
Some people look good in bangs, some people don’t. I have a friend with a smallish face. Her bangs only make her face look smaller. She looks fantastic without bangs, but keeps cutting them for some reason.

As a guy, I always thought bangs looked good on girls and women. The first hint I had that not everyone shared my opinion was a passage in one of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. As best I can recall, Caroline (Ma) Ingalls called Laura’s new bangs her “lunatic fringe.”

I’ve found that when I have a decent perm in, the gray in my hair is a good deal less noticeable (important to a middle-aged job seeker).

If there’s something about Zoe Deschanel’s appearance that’s wrong, then I don’t want her to be right.

And this thread is the first I’ve even heard that anyone has a thing against bangs in general. I mean, sure, there are probably some people they don’t look good on, but then, that’s true of any style.

I’m not too up on hairstyles, but as far as I know, unless you have a crewcut/shaved head or some kind of old-fashioned extremely long unstyled hair you have bangs? Namely, most people? What is there to bash? Very few people can pull of the non-bangs type of hairstyles.

I was about to make this comment too. No interpretation of Alice in Wonderland shows her with bangs.

(But, according to Martin Gardner, the original real-live Alice wore her hair in bangs. He notes that the Tenniel drawings aren’t of the real Alice at all.)

Or curls, or braids, or… there are many hairstyles which don’t include bangs. Also, many people do not use “bangs” as identical with “fringe” (which I think you are) but as a subset thereof.
