Why, in my day a whippersnapper with such a poor understanding of biogeography and evolutionary history would never have been allowed to graduate from the schools. Everyone knows that possums, armadillos and porcupines evolved in SOUTH america, when the continent was isolated from the rest of the world.
All kinds of wonderful creatures sprang up in that splendid isolation (SEE: GG Simpson’s classic book on the subject coincidentally titled “Splendid Isolation”). When the isthmus of Panama formed circa 2 million years ago South America was invaded by the cosmopolitan fauna of the North…camels, foxes, jaguars, tapirs, peccaries, horses, proboscideans. The South American fauna was almost completely replaced…all the horse-like liptoterns, all the astonishing variety of notungulates, many of the edentates, most of the marsupials (including the giant marsupial sabertooth, Thylacosmilus) all went extinct. Some south american natives managed to disperse northwards…your giant ground sloths, your glyptodons, some possums, some of the hystricomorph rodents (ie porcupines), and of course the armadillo. Heck, there’s even a few Toxodon specimens from Florida!
But most of these SA mammals went extinct in North America along with the rest of the megafauna. And we are left with a few pitiful fragments of the SA mammals.
So you see, that so-called “Native” oppossum only got here 2 million years ago! There goes the neighborhood, I say…
