But…but…if we hadn’t gone into Iraq, they would have come here and forced all our women-folk to wear burkas.
Won’t somebody think of the bikinis?

By “mainstream” do you mean Sarah “Death Squad” Palin and Chuck “Snuff Granma” Grassley?

While a debate may eventually appear, I don’t think it’s there yet. Off to MPSIMS.

Excellent! Then I can say this:
Regarding the young woman: w:ould.
OK?
Reminds me of what I frequently remind myself when participating here, to avoid getting into long drawn out arguments with people who aren’t engaging in good faith: “Just because a monkey can bang on a keyboard doesn’t mean that what he types is worth responding to.” And yeah, I forget to remind myself sometimes.
But Frank was entirely right in understanding that just because someone can open their mouth and spout recycled insane LaRouche drivel doesn’t mean that what they’re spouting is worthy of engagement.
Also, I don’t know how he’s done it, but LaRouche has raised an army of college-age kids; all the LaRouche tables I see around Seattle are manned by 18-23yrolds. I take that back, I DO know how he did it: it was the only army he could raise. Young enough not to remember his high-profile insanity in the 80s, and inexperienced enough to swallow what he’s feeding them without much questions, just by lacing it with certain palatable catchphrases. A spoonful of propaganda helps the crazy go down.
That’s a left-handed accent.
While I think Barney Frank is awesome, I think it would’ve been better if he dropped some knowledge on her instead of being so dismissive. I’m hoping most (some?) of these people might be more ignorant than crazy.
Optimist.
So someone gets up and makes a statement. She feels passionate about what she is saying. Barney Frank responds with some of the rudest bullshit I’ve ever heard.
If the woman had been liberal and Frank conservative and had responded in the same way, you liberals would be screaming for his public flogging. Rudeness is rudeness, regardless of who it comes from. Was she right in comparing Obama to Hitler? No. Was Frank right in ridiculing her? No.
Are you right in singing his praises? No.
Listen, I am as alert as the keenest guard dog when it comes to liberal hypocriscy, and I have to say… nope. If the woman had been a looney leftist, and Frank a conservative, I think a few folks here who are also looney lefters might have attacked him. But I suspect the majority of the boardhere (which is undeniably left-leaning, mind you) would have applauded the action.
It may be that the woman was both sincere and passionate about what she thught. How does that give her the right o have her idiocy treated with kid gloves.
Sorry. On this, you’re simply wrong.
If the woman was a liberal (or a conservative, for that matter), her question probably would have been somewhat sane. I doubt in that case that Frank’s riposte would have been so snarky.
Let’s be clear, asking questions about why someone would support a Hitler-like health care policy isn’t a “conservative” question. It’s a loony-tunes, lost touch with reality question.
This shoe doesn’t fit on the other foot as you propose, because the shoe fits only a clown, just like a glass slipper. I have the feeling that if Frank were a conservative responding to an anarchist nutcase with similar abruptness, you’d be cheering. In fact, in another recent thread, you said something to the effect that you haven’t noticed Glenn Beck ever say anything outrageous, so I propose that your impolite remark-o-meter needs a bit of tuning.
Sounds like something Pol Pot would say. Why do you support the Khmer Rouge?
I find it amusing that it is now impossible to tell the difference between Republicans and followers of Lyndon Larouche.
Her, “passionate statement” was ill-informed and offensive drivel complete with a Nazi reference to a Jew. Hooray for Barney Frank for calling her on it.
“A true gentleman is one who is never unintentionally rude.”
– Oscar Wilde
This was on purpose, and should be applauded. She deserved nothing more.
Love the US, so many lovable loonies.
I remember when Bush was doing all his unpopular stuff. Calling his administration a descent into fascism was unthinkable. Only the lefty loonies did it, because as soon as the “fasc” left lips or keyboard, the right was on top of it screaming about how it’s utterly crazy and damn near blasphemous to call what Bush did anything like what the Nazis did. And to a point, they were right; whatever parallels might have been sensibly drawn, it’s an easy cop-out. These days you need to have a serious bank of evidence to even think about making the connection and being taken seriously by anyone.
But now people are calling healthcare reform – healthcare reform! – Nazi programs, and they’re merely “passionate”.
Sigh.
A passionate nutcase is still a nutcase, and we need less respect for crap like she spouted, not more. Being too polite to this kind of stuff just makes it respectable.
If some 9/11 denier said something similar to Bush, and he put the guy down in a similar way, I’d be applauding just as loudly. That’s not an accusation that deserves any respect either.
I think Barney Frank was possibly nicer than I would have been.
Good lord, what lies are being told by the other side.
