Looks like a pretty good trade, nonoe of our grade A prospects, but all can contribute on the major league level eventually and I think most of them will.
Marte will hopefully be that lefty we need and Nady is the right handed bat people keep telling me we need, except I have not been so sure we did. What does this mean for Sexton I wonder.
Coke and Kontos were both pitching at Double-A Trenton. The 26-year-old Coke was 9-4 with a 2.60 ERA, while the 23-year-old Kontos was 3-9 with a 3.77 ERA.
Jose Tabata is only 19. He’s a 19-year-old Venezuelan who has already advanced to the Double-A Eastern League, and Baseball America ranked him last winter as the Yankees’ third-best prospect. He was only hitting .248 but has a lot of speed. He was one of three Yankee prospects that were possibillities for eventually moving Melky out of center. Last year he hit .307 for the Tampa Yankees (A)
Ross Ohlendorf is a 25 year old we got in the Randy Johnson trade and was ineffective as a long reliever this year but has some potential. I liked him, but it wasn’t working for him with the Yanks.
Inexplicable. I don’t know how the damn Yankees do this every year. Over in the NL, the Pirates were telling the Mets they wanted two top prospects, including the Mets best prospect Fernando Martinez, for Nady alone. There’s still almost a week before the deadline.
Why would the Pirates cave now, and deal not one but two of their assets for three nonentities and a 19-year-old with very serious maturity issues?
At least this trade renews my burning hatred of all things Yankee.
How do they do it?
Who was your other top prospects, The Pirates got in Tabata a 19 year old propspect that many think will be better than Fernando Martinez and three pitchers that all show major league potential. I realize only one of these 4 were one of the Yanks top prospects, but this is part of the Met farm system being weak at this time.
I still think it was a good trade for both teams.
BTW: How is Nady’s arm?
I see he has been playing mostly Right Field and maybe he also allows the Yanks to let Abreu walk at the end of the year if his demands are too high.
There has been an update on the trade.
In my opinion the Pirates now have two players that will be 4 or 5 guys in the Pirates rotations in upcoming years (if they stay healthy.) I like Karstens, I always thought he was a bit better than Rasner who is pitching effectively currently for the Yanks.
McCutchen may actually have a little more upside, but both players are over 25.
It’s no different than the Santana trade. The Twins told the Yankees ad Red Sox they wanted both of the systems three top prospects plus another minor leaguer for Santana. Who exactly did he Met’s give up for him?
The Pirates accepted less because they traded with the other league.
Apparently Fox is teaming up with the Boston papers to begin railroading Manny out of town. I guess the excuse of Manny being Manny has finally run its course.
Manny Ramirez is my least favorite player in baseball.
Don’t count on Manny leaving. They all need something to report, that’s all. The Fox twits don’t have anything except what they picked up from the paper left outside their hotel rooms this morning. “The papers” means basically Dan Shaughnessy, who’s been covering the Sox for way too many years and has turned sour, especially since the 2004 Series cost him his future sales for “Curse of the Bambino”. Don’t be fooled by what leaks out of the clubhouse; there has to be a hell of a lot more in any clubhouse that’s kept inside. That’s especially important in Boston (and NY and Chi), and Francona’s brilliance as a manager is based on being able to keep pressure-induced situations “in the family”. We don’t know what the real situation is overall, and neither do the reporters.
Manny’s been the same guy for 8 years, and they’ve found a modus vivendi in the clubhouse through all that and 2 Series wins. The team’s decision on picking up his options for 2 more will depend only on his performance, and any dropoff they expect in it. Not on what the “Curly Haired Boyfriend” prints. (That nickname is Carl Everett’s legacy, btw).
BTW, If I were a different team’s fan, I think I might dislike Youkilis more than Ramirez, for all his whining.
I checked the Globe this morning, I thought I saw more than just Shaughnessy’s typical kvetching.
As a Yankee fan I have never generated much hate for Manny or Youk. I hate seeing Ortiz in a position to hurt us late, but I have not hated any Red Sox as much as I hated Clemens.
BTW: 6-2 now for the Yanks! Go Yanks!
The Indians just traded Casey Blake to the Dodgers for a decent-batting catcher (we have 2 fantastic catchers) and a minor league pitcher with a 4.97 ERA.
What the…?
I really fucking hate Andy Marte (presumably our new 3rd baseman). He’s got a lot of work to do to prove himself now.
He’s needed a new outlet for his hatred ever since Schilling went down. Funny how he never noticed Manny all that much until now that it’s become more fashionable.
What? Isn’t the season over yet? This is been a horrible season to be a Mariners’ fan. ESPN is reporting that the Yankees are interested in Jarrod Washburn. As long as the M’s don’t give him away, I’ll be happy. Blow up the team. Trade everybody except Felix Hernandez, including Ichiro, if you get market value. Ugh.
I only read the Globe when the Yanks are playing the Red Sox, but I have been doing so for 8 years or more now. So I am probably one of the rare Yankee fans that know he is as big a shithead as Mike Lupica is for the NY teams.
However, when I checked the Globe around 10am, there were articles from other writers and some discussion highlights all bashing Manny. It wasn’t just Dan this time.
BTW: He writes or wrote for Page 2 on ESPN and was often humorous even when bashing my team. As much as Lupica annoys me, he is also often very good and thus I continue to read these two that often come off petty or bitter.
So 8 straight for the Yanks now. I would love to make it 9. I just wish KC would beat Tampa for me.
Nice sweep by the D-Backs. At least they’re able to put string of victories together. Two out of three from the Cubs and a sweep of the Giants. Now, we need to do the same against San Diego. It would be nice to see them get a larger lead in the NL West and pull ahead of the Dodgers once and for all.
Well, Sidney Ponson woke up and realized he was … well, Sidney Ponson. Still, I’m happy with 2 of 3 at Fenway. The Sox have some issues to deal with concerning Manny “being Manny.” I don’t know how popular Manny is with his teammates, so it’s hard for me to guess whether his potential move would help or hurt their chemistry. Any Sox fans wanna chime in with your thoughts?
Ponson’s habit of putting 2 runners on every inning is not a great idea against a team as good as the Sox. Still, You had to be thinking A-Rod was going to make it a one run game at that one point and instead the Yanks got nothing out of it.
Now we get three against Baltimore and all three pitching match-ups look good to great for the Yanks. I want another two out of three.
Manny apparently annoyed some of his fellow teammates this time, but the Red Sox could not hope to get anyone to replace what he does for the team in a trade. I’ll bet he plays out the season and becomes a Met next year as a free agent. (If Minaya is still the GM at least)
Jim
I stopped paying attention a few weeks ago. I poked my head up when Sexson’s long-overdue release happened (see my posts above), but otherwise I’ve checked out. I’m not giving another dime to this team until Lincoln resigns.
I know, I could be accused of being a fairweather fan, but the way I look at it is, there’s bad weather, and there’s having a tornado full of thumbtacks screw itself up your asshole.
How not paying attention am I? Here’s how not paying attention I am: My girlfriend lives in Boston, and flew out to visit me a few days ago. The day she went back, she sent me a text message: “The Red Sox were paying in Seattle, and you didn’t take me to the game?” Me: Sorry, I had absolutely no idea.
Dude, from your lips to the ears of whatever supernatural party takes an interest in baseball.
