Spain had two perfectly good goals disallowed, Korea got through on penalties.
In Rugby League we have video refs, the onfield ref will ask the vid ref to look for a specific point of concern, the vidref can only respond to the field refs questions and cannot make any ruling directly.
The onfield ref is only allowed to look for certain things from the video footage so some infringements do not come under the remit of the vidref, for instance - forward passes are illegal - but the onfield ref cannot use the video footage to see them, if he misses it durnig play then that’s it.This is a serious weakness as the call can be extremely fine.
In all other ways the video ref is excellent.
It seems stupid to me that FIFA can use video evidence after a soccer match to investigate infringements (such as Rivaldo, who feigned an injury which resulted in a player being sent off) but the onfield referee cannot do this, even when the information is at its most useful, during the match.
Such obvious failure by referees will bring accusations of corruption and favouritism, lets face it the Italians, more than anyone, have good reason to feel aggrieved and now Spain can join the list.
We now have at least two top teams eliminated solely on the basis of crap referees and Belgium can feel pretty sick too.
It really detracts from the tournament, if Korea were to win it then it would make the whole thing lose credibilty since there is no way they should still be in the competition, and even if that seems beyond the bounds of liklehood I’m afraid that the performance of referees so far does not rule it out.
casdave, i’m with you totally… if Korea win the cup i can’t see them as world champions…because even though they are an excellent team, they’re only still in the tournament because of blind incompetent referees…
i hope FIFA uses video refs for the next World Cup…even if in a limited role… does anyone know FIFA’s stand on video-refs ?
Ya’ll can bitch all you want. Spain was offsides on the first, and play had stoped on the second*. Offsides on the first, Spaniards kicking it in after the whistle for the hell of it on the second.
[sub]* granted, it was a bad call, but once the ref blew the whistle the Koreans stoped playing. It’s not a fair goal if the other team isn’t doing anything to stop you.[/sub]
Here’s a quarter. Buy a clue. Or better yet, the whole rulebook.
It was never a case of an offside (and it is “offside,” no “s” in the word) call on our first goal, instead it was called back…well, because we got fucking jobbed that’s why. The bullshit call was actually some shirt tugging or another which happens on every damm play in the box.
As for the second legitimate goal, catch the replay, wtach it. And then do it again. Because if you can’t see that Korea kept playing up until we scored, your prescription might need adjusting.
Throw in the bogus offside call on Luis Enrique – which I’m guessing is the one you’re confused with – and the post by Morientes and you have one of the most one-sided semi finals I can recall in over thirty years of watching World Cups.
As a Spaniard, I felt for the Italians when they were axed so unfairly, although I must also admit to a sense of relief over not having to face them again – we haven’t beaten them in an official match since 1920. But seeing as we were handed the same royal fucking, I have a feeling Italy would have been a much easier opponent.
At least the goals would have counted.
Not sure how long is going to take for international footy to recover from the black-eye (hell, body beaten to a fucking pulp!) that this sham of a tournament has given it, but I suspect it will take some doing.
Fuck Ghandour, fuck Blatter, fuck the Korean football team…and fuck you for that matter.
the full rule book is available online at fifa.com
the incompetent refereeing is just making me mad to the point of not respecting korea as champions if they win… this is bad for me…bad for football and bad for the world…because in all fairness, korea is an excellent team…
i’m not saying it’s a conspiracy or something… i’m saying it’s extremely and mindblowingly incompetent refereeing… and FIFA must correct it… if not at this world cup then at the next…
i hope spain and italy bring about a real solid opposition to the current system of refereeing… and i hope the world rallies behind them… i’m hoping they start a loud campaign after the world cup to fix things before the next cup…
Well, if you did say it was a conspiracy you wouldn’t be the first. I know several people who think Korea are deliberately being given decisions in order to keep them in the tournament as long as possible. Personally I’m more inclined to think the problems are just that too many of these officials (the linesmen in particular), coming from countries with much lower standards of football, are simply not up to the task of officiating at this level.
With you all the way, ruadh. The field ref (Egyptian, right?) did a great job today, and the Jamaican bloke on the right line wasn’t bad, but that other idiot should not have been in the world cup.
Fuck politics, FIFA. Stop pleasing all the “little countries”. You’re not the U fucking N, you’re supposed to provide top notch refs and linesmen. Clear? Then DO it already.
Having said that: Spain were the better team - and sometimes the better team doesn’t win. Spain suffered a few bad calls, sure, but they also missed a few opportunities they could have capitalised on. It’s too easy to blame South Korea, or the ref. Sure, it’s bitter now, and I feel for guys like RedFury. But as a relatively unbiased spectator (Go Hiddink!! :D), I have to comment that part of the blame lies with the Spanish players themselves. The linesman was very wrong on a few occasions, but so were those top-notch strikers in red.
Yes, this was a very bad call. And despite RedFury’s interesting take on the play, it was very clear the players had reacted to the call and let up before Spain kicked the ball in. Just like in U.S. football when the guy keeps running for the endzone after the play is blown dead. Sure, it looks good, and one certainly can get caught up in the moment, but everyone knows what the whistle and/or a raised flag means.
