JK Simmons has been cast as Gordon for the Justice League movie. Not sure how he fits into a grandiose cosmic adventure, but he’s in there.
I saw it last night, and was prepared to hate it after reading the reviews.
I didn’t hate it. It was…okay. I actually liked it better than the third Nolan Batman film. My favorite parts were Batfleck (Affleck did a good job, especially as Bruce Wayne), Wonder Woman, and Alfred.
My least favorite part was Lex Luthor, who was just annoying. Consistently.
All in all, it was better than I expected it to be, and I was mildly entertained for two and a half hours. Not anywhere near as good as the Marvel films, but definitely not the total clunker the reviewers want us to believe it is.
The movie was probably 30 minutes or so too long. I did like it for the most part though.
While Lex was a bit whiney his manipulation of everyone involved was beautifully evil genius. Gal Gadot was great as Wonder Woman (damn, she is so hot) and I too am looking forward to her solo movie. The Flash coming out of the speed force in the dream sequence was cool and I am looking forward to seeing how the finished Cyborg will look.
At the end of the movie when Batman confronts Luthor in prison, Lex says something to the effect of “_____ is hungry and coming”. What was the blank? I missed it.
I think I missed The Flash dream sequence. Can anyone describe it?
- Amy Adams as Lois Lane … meh … nothing about that character really excited me. Although, I did tear up a little when Batman realized that Superman loved his mother.
Also, whom was Bruce Wayne in bed with when he woke up from one of his nightmares?
When Batman is decrypting the hard drive he falls asleep. One of the things he saw was the Flash coming out of a storm effect and he was saying ‘Martha is the key’ or something close to that.
Hmm … totally missed that. Of course, I was really confused by that scene. I wasn’t sure whether the hard drive itself was beaming those images at him.
I honestly have noticed and always thought it was funny that both Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent’s mothers were named Martha so that being a plot point made me smile rather than roll my eyes like a lot of people did.
“He.”
Most likely Darkseid. Who, by the time Justice League gets here, is going to seem like a rip-off of Thanos instead of the other way around.
So why didn’t Superman just instantly incinerate Batman with his laser vision?
I saw it tonight with my son.
Easily the best thing about the movie and easily the best Bruce Wayne and Batman ever on the big screen was Ben Affleck. He was excellent. He looked the part, was the first actor to ACTUALLY be big and buff enough to be Batman and I loved his Batman costume. For those who think he killed inconsistently, I offer this: when he can subdue a criminal without killing him, he does; when there are too many bad guys armed with guns shooting at him and the choice is shooting back or running away, he shoots back. I had no problem with this, as it is in line with other movie portrayals of Batman, and it seemed to me to fit into his bitter, cynical older Batman.
Gal Godot was good as Wonder Woman and I enjoyed her parts of the movie, but I think her inclusion is a symptom of one of the movie’s two big problems.
Henry Cavill had a good performance, but I disliked his brooding, indecisive Superman. He was better and ironically, more decisive as Clark Kent.
That brings up the worst part of the movie: Jesse fucking Eisenberg. His Luthor was just horrible, both because of his nonsensically manic performance and because Lex Luthor’s “plan” makes no sense. Lex Luthor in comics and movies has always been out for himself and his own aggrandizement and enrichment, first and foremost. He’s a narcissist. This Luthor was some sort of quasi-atheistic crusading ideologue who was willing to go to jail and sacrifice his power to kill Superman. He had no goal beyond killing Superman. This was the second big problem with the movie and it’s linked to the first.
They should NOT have tried to squeeze The Justice League into this movie. Luthor should have conned Batman and Superman into fighting each other to get them out of the way while he made a push for his real aim, which would have been something conniving to give himself more political power and financial game. No Wonder Woman, no Doomsday. No Justice League. THAT movie would have been so much better.
Oh well.
Lex Luthor champion of humans fearful of the alien and his potential has been the norm in comics one way or another for quite some time in comics
He’s pretty much the hero of the Crime Syndicate event not too long ago
The crazy young Zuckerberg CEO is just an update of the 80s Luthor CEO
Fwiw
I had heard the complaint that Batman kills people in this and was watching for it and honestly don’t remember him ever actually kill anyone in a non dream sequence. There were lots of hits that would probably kill someone in real life but they weren’t any different really than the moves he does in the comics and cartoons. It just looks more brutal because it’s live action. It is possible I missed something but I didn’t see it.
But he uses that paranoia to gain political and personal power. This Luthor is ready to sacrifice his power for this gambit…and in fact, he does.
You missed several somethings. He straight up killed everyone he shot from the batmobile and the batplane when fighting Luthor’s goons first while chasing the Kryptonite and again while trying to rescue Martha Kent. And when he was fighting the goons on the third floor, he used their own guns to shoot several of them, and also shot the flamethrower tank causing the one goon to explode into flames and die.
The comics are inconsistent, but there are versions where Gotham and Metropolis are essentially sister cities separated by a bay. I think Snyder himself in an interview said it was akin to SF and Oakland
I get your complaint and don’t disagree with it.
I haven’t followed the books closely the last few years but a Luthor who would in fact sacrifice all to prove his point isn’t too crazy these days. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s happened .
Ironically…Batman does the same thing in Millers 80s mini series. He sacrifices everything to prove a point to Superman.
I think making Luthor the quasi good guy or giving him a good point is attractive but writes him and Supes into a corner
Kind of like what they did with Magneto back in the day
I agree that it’s not a bad idea for a villain…just not Lex Luthor, at least not for my tastes.
But again, I think having Lex act more like Lex would have made a better movie in that it wouldn’t have involved that half-assed Doomsday.
Luthor was the ultimate good guy at the end of the JLU series. He sacrificed himself to end the Darkseid threat.
