Battlestar Galactica 3.10 - "The Passage" (spoilers)

All of this has had spoilers before, and all of this will have spoilers again.

Spoiler policy:

If it’s aired, or if it’s purely speculation, no need for a spoiler box. If it’s from a future episode as revealed by interviews, web content, or kamala-induced clairvoyance, then hide it in a spoiler box, and provide a generally descriptive label so we can decide for ourselves whether or not it’s something we want to know.

Okay, before I get to tonight’s show, I figured I should share something I stumbled across earlier today. It’s an up-to-the-minute Q&A with Ron Moore, hosted by Yahoo TV’s page. The formatting is wonky in the extreme (there are no paragraph breaks separating the Q’s from Ron’s A’s), which makes it difficult to read, but there’s some great stuff in there.

Some highlights:
Will we see Starbuck’s “daughter” Casey again? - Unlikely; no plans at present. They had discussed some options, but elected not to pursue them.

Have we abandoned Roslin’s role as mystical prophet? - No, that will be coming back during the current season.

What about the probe? Will we get more clues about the search for Earth? - Yes, that will also be a featured storyline this season.

Is Sharon’s baby Hera going to play a recurring role in the story, or is she done? - Yes, she’ll be important, but apparently they’re going to let it stay largely dormant until they get closer to the end of the series.

Have we seen the last of Anders? - No, he’ll be coming back this season, and it’ll be his own story, not directly connected to Starbuck. Ron says “it’s sort of hard to describe.”
Lots of good stuff in there, and nothing too hugely earth-shaking (no revelations about characters not surviving, or anything like that). Still, if you want to discuss items from that article, please spoiler-box them with a label “from the RDM Q&A” or whatever.

There is one significant non-plot item: The show is getting a schedule change in the spring: it’ll move to Sunday nights.

Okay. Tonight.

Script is by Sooper Storytelling Genius Jane Espenson. It’ll focus on Kat, who I think it’s fair to say is not really anybody’s favorite character, but this show has a way of redeeming its people whenever it takes the time to get a really clear look at them. Tigh, of course, is the poster child for that, and even Anders got dramatically more interesting in his last couple of appearances.

The preview looks absolutely jam-packed and is borderline incomprehensible as a result. After last week’s virtually-no-story all-character installment, it seems we’re doing a whiplash-worthy reversal into a plot-heavy episode, with outer-space-action aplenty. Presuming they don’t fall on their ass with another “Black Market,” this may be exactly the tonic the non-fans of last week are hoping for.

Tonight at 9pm on Sci-Fi. Be there!

I just don’t get the hate for Kat. No, she’s not my favorite. However, “She’s a cocky pilot! She sucks” never really struck me as a valid criticism.

Since this is 3.10, is this the last one before the break? When’s it pick up after?

Hehe…everytime I read that sentence, I think of this guy:

That said, I’m not sure what to expect from this week’s “Quest for Food” episode. As noted, the previews were not very helpful. I’m guessing Kat will experience some non-fatal challenges, and food supplies will be preserved. Either that, or Adama is going to be replaced by Admiral Donner…

I rather liked “Black Market”; mislike Hotdog, not Kat; and am now rather interested in bland Anders no longer being bland. I’m such a nonconformist.

Cool Q&A find, Cervaise, although damn your eyes, since I couldn’t resist spoiling myself.

Laziness prevails. After trying to struggle through that non-formatted crap I gave up.

I’m unspoiled! Yay!

For me it’s a little bit of the pissed off Latina act. I’m not sure what she’s got to be all pissed off Latina about in a universe where everyone’s gender equal and completely race blind (well, unless you’re a toaster). It’s like she’s got to prove a Latina can be a good pilot in a universe where she wouldn’t have to prove that.

I wouldn’t mind seeing another dimension to her character and not just pissed off all the time.

Well, we saw that in the runup to the New Caprica rescue…but we still had people bitching about, “OMG, Kat is their CAG, they’re all gonna diiiie!”.

The formatting wasn’t nearly as annoying as the frakkin’ author’s fraktacular use of ‘frak’ every frakkin’ other word, frak it.

Please take my “not anybody’s favorite character” literally.

Sure, some people actively dislike her, and fervently wish each week for a roguishly handsome pirate captain to kick her into a Raptor engine ;), but I suspect those people are not a majority. All I’m saying is, if you took everybody’s list of favorite characters, I’d be willing to guess that Kat will top nary a one.

Well, okay, I’ll say maybe one, from some dude who’s remembering that one scene when the actress appeared on The L Word.

But other than him, nobody.

Survivor count: 41, 420

Wonder if those last 3 digits are just coincidental?

Did I see Spence from First Wave, the Pegasus pilot? Cool.

Wow…lost a whole ship already…The Adriatic or something like that…

What’s up with with Zeus being Jupiter all of the sudden? The close captions still say Zeus.

Okay, that sucked. Usually I’m in these threads saying “Gee, I thought it was pretty good!”, but…lousy.

I missed that. Greek and Roman for the same dude.

Shucks, more religion, more Hera, more BMBC (Baltar Might Be a Cylon) and killing off a major character.

Ron Moore is ugly, and his Mother dresses him funny.

Kat was dead meat as soon as she asked Starbuck to let her put it right with the Old Man. It’s just like being the kid in a war movie who thinks the worst is over: dead meat.

On the other hand, the show needed an episode or two like this, that’s focusing on one character and the street-level life in the fleet.

On the gripping hand, just how many like-his-real-daughter daughters does Adama need?

Baltar is still having threeway frakfests with Xenabot and Caprica. As noted in previous threads, Naked Xenabot is good. Cat buys the farm. Surprised they pulled the trigger on that, but she died honorably. Whether she’ll wake in a tub of goo appears to be an open question. Was kinda hoping for some Starkbuck/Cat loving.

Dunno why they used Jupiter instead of Zeus, unless the “Eye of Jupiter” is the famous red spot on the planet…

Waiting for the web preview to download.

Larry Niven, The Mote in God’s Eye?

How is 3 able to keep downloading without anyone noticing? Even if she orders the Centurian to delete any memory of killing her isn’t somebody monitoring the resurrection pools? And aren’t they on a different ship than the baseship?

Yup. It’s not like I’ve got a lot of opportunities to use the phrase and be understood, so I seize them when the audience is appropriate.

You know, I think they need to bring back the Colonial Gang so they can add space weather forecasts to their news reports:

Cloudy with a chance for raining battlestars in space over New Caprica.

Sunshine slowdown at the Algae Planet.

Waiting for the “snow flurries in space” planet next.
