But just how old is it? It looks like it’s from the 50s, but then the barber mentions Elvis Costello.
I think it must be a skit, anyone else have info on this?

It just looks like an overdub to old film footage to me. (Or am I missing the question? Are you looking for the original source of the video?)
Yes, it looks authentic to me …and why would anyone go so much trouble to fake authentic-looking 50’s footage just to overdub it?
Yeah, the video is authentic. The audio is dubbed. I guess I’m confused as to what the question is now. The source of the archival video?
It looks like the film stock predates the Mullet haircut by at least 20 or 30 years. It started in the US in the late '70s and is based on Native American hairstyles of the past.
It sounds like overdubbing is much more apparent to experienced ears. I didnt even think of that. I did wonder if any Scots might know about “Raiders of the Lost Archive” and whether it was supposed to be comedy or serious.
It also pre-dates Elvis Costello’s career by about that much. That was the only clue I had that it wasn’t from the 50s
The name of the YouTube channel is BBC Scotland Comedy.
Eyes, not ears. Didn’t you notice that the timing of the barber’s mouth movements bears no relationship to the soundtrack? It’s very obvious!
I guess what’s confusing to people is that it just isn’t very funny! But yes, a weak attempt at overdubbing a ‘comedy’ voiceover.
I’d go as far as “mildly amusing”.
It’s one of a whole series of overdubbing old clips:
BBC Scotland is the amateur wing of British TV.
Well, I watched it on my phone, so I missed that!
Ah, that would explain it. On a big screen you could see they made no real attempt to synch the overdub with the lip movement - I think it was deliberate, part of making it a silly joke, along with the “Elvis Costello” anachronism.
