I know it must be hard to watch, but the fact that he’s TRYING seems like a very good sign. He’s still got his gumption and he’s doing his best to get better. (Not like my poor Wolfie cat, who had no interest in much of anything, just sat there, had to be carried around, and seemed like he was just waiting to die. He got his wish. )
Here are some more good wishes and atta-boys for Quincy.
Brownie is improving as well. She poops and pees regularly and can actually stand and take 3-4 wobbly steps before giving up and dragging herself. I believe she is scamming us on the food issue and waits until we offer something better than her regular food to eat becuase we are anxious about her eating and drinking.
I’ve been taking her for walks (carry’s?) around the neighborhood so she can get her nosey sniffing in.
We are considering buying one of the various dog wheelchairs available, but no decision made yet.
Quincy was up all night panting loudly and demanding water and attention. I got up like 5 times. Now he is all snuggled up with his head on a pillow sleeping away. Crap. He has always been a demanding dog. I can not sleep or nap. Once I am up ,I stay up. 2 dogs. 1 wife and a cat all sleeping away now.
Ah, that explains why he’s 50 pounds, then. Pete was 40 pounds and he was a butterball. I can’t imagine a 50 pound beagle that could do more than waddle.
I hope he feels better soon! My late dog Princess got loose and hit by a car when she was eight months old. Her pelvis was fractured in five places, and she couldn’t walk for months. I hope his recovery is swifter than that, and if it’s not that you don’t need to muzzle him every time you need to bring him out. Even sick dogs are pretty spirited!
New vet today says he does not think he is really paralyzed. He was able to give him a thorough check up. The other vet was a big chicken. He thinks he did damage which may heal in time. He gave steroids and pain killers. Gotta wait another week.
The vet poked and prodded away because Quincy was running a fever and did not feel well. I was thinking ,…you better get all you need today because next time wont be so easy. He has slept since he got home.
Ahh yes, beagles are magnets for accidents. I have a a beagle, about 10 years old, who’s been attacked by a pitbull, broken a leg, got bit by a snake (in los angeles of all places), and somehow sprained his neck to the point where he couldn’t raise it above his body. They definitely are accident prone.
gonzo and LOUNE, best wishes to you guys and Quincy from the Adventure Beagles, Gomez & Lily. I sure hope he gets back to his normal beaglishness soon.
We’re putting him down today. You know when you have a pet that’s hanging on and you look at them and either they give you almost a look of permission, or when you reassess the situation and you come up with an answer that’s completely different from the one you got the last time you asked the question of yourself?
Yeah, that time is now.
Quincy, you were an amazing animal. You were possibly the smartest dog I’ve ever come across, and you had an amazing personality, even though you were a dick, but it was worth it, because you went through hell for the first part of your life until you came into mine and we spent the rest of your life trying to make amends for that
I only wish I could have spent more time with you the past week or so. I know you were in good hands with my dad there to take care of you.
I’m very sorry. I had an airedale who broke her back right at the base of her tail. I hoped with time and steroids she’d come back, but you could just see this vibrant farm dog lose interest in life. I finally had to make that same decision.
