Beast With a Billion Backs (Spoilers)

Okay, I think there was a thread on this earlier, but I can’t hardly search, so, here’s mine.

Who’s seen it?

I liked it in general, but I did think it was…a little out there. An entire universe romancing earth? I liked all the little jokes, but the overall plot just seemed like it was trying too hard. Glad they didn’t put in another belabored song/dance number. And death ball was fun.

While it worked as a standalone, it totally failed as a follow-up to Bender’s Big Score. The tone and characterization was a total break, and while it was somewhat amusing, it completely lacked the warmth and snappiness that I expect from Futurama. It would be a B- as a standalone, but following Bender’s Big Score I’d have to rate it as a middling C.

Le previous thread est ici.

My verdict (after only one viewing so far) was: a decent enough entry with some typically ingenious ideas that nevertheless seemed disappointingly offkey: the humor strayed far too often into the Drawn Together-esque lowbrow and I disliked the lousy character continuity. About a C for me too. I vastly preferred BBS, which despite its flaws still offered laughs, an ambitious storyline, and plenty of heart.

But as I said, I’ve only seen it once, and it’s possible that further viewings will boost the episode(s) in my esteem. I used to dislike Bender Gets Made and Mars University, but they’ve definitely improved on subsequent watching.

Very much looking forward to Bender’s Game.

Oops. Should I have this one closed and just post in the old one, or is that one zombie age now?

Over on GotFuturama, and here too it seems, lots of people liked either one or the other of the two movies, but not both. I for one was kind of underwhelmed with BBS, but really enjoyed BWABB. I’d say BWABB would be an average to above-average episode. I’m not sure the long format completely works for Futurama, but I’ll take what I can get.

It’s been long enough that this isn’t a duplicate, IMO.

Anyway I preferred Beast… to Bender’s Big Score. It just felt more Futurama-y to me, and I thought the jokes were better. But my favorite part was the oddball melding of an old fashioned B-movie creature takes over the world plot with these strange ideas about love, and how it nearly works out. I really liked that the twist was that there was no twist: Yivo was really offering heaven to everybody in the universe. Much more philosophically complicated, which I liked. I’m eagerly awaiting Bender’s Game.

I prefered Beast, though I think I hate that guy that plays the universe. I think he was behind some breifly lived animated series that completely irritated me with its stupidity. It forever tarnished his image with me. Nevertheless, Benders Big Score was awful. This one was OK.

I see that the abominations name is David Cross and his monstrous creation was Freek Show. Actually, he was pretty good on Arrested Development, so perhaps if he begs I’ll spare his family when I’m king.

He’s great in his appearances on NewsRadio too. Being on two of the best sitcoms ever oughtta grant him enough credit to obviate his sins of Freek Show, whatever they may be (never saw it).

I think both movies were pretty “Meh.” Some good parts, and I don’t feel like I wasted my time, but I don’t think I’ll watch them dozens of times like I have with the old episodes.

I wasn’t so hot on BBS because I thought it felt forced - too many self indulgent jokes that weren’t that funny, a needlessley complicated plot that ‘fixed’ a lot of sad, touching moments from the show, and though the Fry/Leela plot was sweet, I think they’ve done better in that department too.

BwaBB felt like it wasn’t trying quite so hard to be meaningful and touching, and instead focused on being funny. Fry’s polyamorous relationship, deathball, the league of robots, and Bender’s son, my personal favorite - a new high (low?) point for the show in mean humor. I also loved the fact that the whole second act was a giant reference to hentai tentical rape, but they never really made a joke to call attention to it, they just let it be.

Also, BwaBB didn’t have the horrible songs.
