Beautiful Garbage

Am I alone in saying that I was a bit disappointed by this CD?

The first two CDs from Garbage spend a lot of time on my player, but this one seemed more mainstream.

I have listened to it over and over, and there are some good songs, but somehow…I feel let down.

Anyone else?

Interesting. I loved it–it seemed really mature, and I felt like they’ve evolved as a band. I thought the music was wonderfully layered; the guitars and electronic stuff under Shirley’s voice combined with really catchy songs. Hmm. I do get what you’re saying about it being more mainstream though. I guess depending on who you’re talking to, that could be a good or a bad thing.

Far better than the first two. A lot less techno-bubblegum/wanna be dance, more mature, emotionally heavier. Any CD that can go from the classic Garbage almost-rock of ‘Til the Day I Die’ to the savagely depressed "Cup of Coffee’ gets my thumbs up.

I think the big difference is the vocals and lyrics really got a chance to shine through on this one. I don’t think that necessarily make it more mainstream.

After listening to it for a couple of weeks, I’d still say it’s my least favourite Garbage CD - but that doesn’t make it bad, per se. A little too poppy in spots - Cherry Lips comes to mind - but I love Cup of Coffe and Drive You Home, and Can’t Cry These Tears is irrisistably catchy (in a ballad way).

They’ve definitely gone in a new direction, but not neccessarily a bad one. Mainstream maybe, but - hasn’t Garbage always been verging on that?

I liked the first 2 albums better. They seemed a bit heavier, a bit more angry. The latest one does show off thier amazing range of talent, but I hope they return to a heavier sound in future releases. Still I do enjoy it.

Hmm, I’m not saying I don’t enjoy it, but I liked the first two much better. I think I just had very high expectations - there isn’t a single song on the first two albums that I don’t like.

Cherry Lips is very pop-ish - although I have to admit I like its catchy refrain.

The second last song (title escapes me) is the sort of thing I’d expect from Britney Spears.

Cup of coffee is good, I agree, and so is the first single, Androgony.

My favourite song is track 11 (again can’t remember the title) with its haunting guitar and excellent evocative lyrics:

“Coughing up feeling just for you”

etc. Awesome stuff.

More of that sort of thing would have been good.

I was a bit surprised that there were no, and are still no, singles played on the stations I listened to. Then I downloaded a couple songs and saw a video. What on earth did they do to my beloved Garbage?? It’s like they were trapped for months with teen pop artists and assimilated. I really don’t see myself getting this cd, unless it’s on sale for very cheap. Hopefully the next cd will be a return to their orginal sound.

I had heard that the video to Androgony is good, but I haven’t seen it…

i dont like it at all. it’s strange cos all the music reviewers are giving it top marks but i cant see why. i think it’s a bit bland.

I haven’t heard the whole thing, but haven’t liked what I heard. I think their first CD was the best and the next two were a steady decline. In their Androgony video they just look old and slow. The men must be over or near 50.

Shirley Manson could have been the rock version of Sheena Easton, or she could have gone pop and followed Sheena, but looks like she missed stardom.

I bought the disc when it came out, having not heard any singles or seen a video. It’s okay. It’s better than most pop/rock discs, but it pales in comparison to the debut (especially) and Version 2.0.

Then I saw them perform “Androgyny” on Letterman (or was it Leno?). Shirley has shaved the sides of her head and looked rather bad. Which is impressive, since she is on my Top 5 Laminate List.

Anyway, I haven’t listened to the disc since I first bought it, so I should give it another whirl. Hopefully before my import Elbow and Starsailor discs come in, I mean.

I haven’t seen any videos, am a huge fan of their first 2 albums and think “beautifulgarbage” is great. I think the point of the “Brittany-Aguilera-Madonna”-clone pop stuff is satire. The lyrics are much more substantive than the genre usually supports and the composition and production are really fantastic. I think it’s their way of thumbing their noses at the pablum makers and having a little fun. Sign of a great band if you ask me.

The 3rd CD is of fairly uneven quality & direction. Some good sounds but overall a disappointment compared to previous releases.
