Where have you been all my life? Like a slightly more flavorful Pilsener, but still with all the crispness and drinkability. Especially good for warm weather!
You are absolutley right. Nothing better than a nice cold Kölsch in the summer.
The Butterfly’s Ghost - Kölsch Mädche (native cologne girl)
Right there with you. Kolsch has everything I want in a beer and nothing that I don’t want. It’s crisp, nutty, not too hoppy, not too sweet. Brilliant with German cooking!
Check out some videos on youtube of the Fruh brewery in Koln.
[Emphasis mine]
This Westphalian can read those words, but cannot parse the meaning.
Sorry, The Butterfly’s Ghost
We have some of the little Kölsch glasses and enjoy sitting out on the porch on warm nights and having a couple served in those. We can get the real article at the local specialty beer place or have this local version, which is very good.
Yes! I discovered Kolsch last year during a visit to the Sierra Nevada Brewery. It was one of the free samples. We bought a 6 pack at the brewery, but I wasn’t able to find it in stores. It was included in the summer mix pack, though. It seems to be more popular this year as several of our local breweries are making it and at least one restaurant has it on tap.
Just recently finished my growler of Kolsch from Sactown Union Brewery. Need to get more.
German beer is mostly lager. Much of it is good, but it’s kinda boring. North Rhine-Westphalia is the only place that still makes ales in any amount, but they use lager-type production methods. The other similar beer style you could check out, from nearby Dusseldorf, is altbier.
It’s a good summer beer.
I’ve been drinking Reissdorf Kolsch with enormous enjoyment for years. Gaffel is almost as good.
Someday I MUST take a trip to Koln. Due solely to their beer, I have developed the opinion that all the women there are beautiful and that their cuisine is the most delicious in the world.
A long, long time ago I interviewed for a job in Köln, and for dinner they took me out and fed me blood sausage, fried onions, mashed potatoes & applesauce (Himmel u. Aäd to you Germans), and a healthy amount of Kölsch. What a delightful surprise that turned out to be.
Don’t forget all the wheat beers, also ales.
Ah I had thought I heard otherwise but you’re right. Was never a big fan of them, especially the heavier ones.
Meh. I’ve tried a couple of different Kolsch beers at Cafe Bavaria in the Tosa Village. I can take it or leave it. Most recent one was Früh.
I just had a couple cans of a limited release collaboration between Evil Twin Brewing and Omnipollo called Old Fashioned Lemonsde IPA. A near perfect “summer beer”, it’s classified as an IPA with added fruit rather than a shandy.
I can totally imagine drinking cases of it out on the boat this summer, except for the $4.75 per 12 oz can price tag.
Yeah, with a 7% ABV, it would almost definitely have to be a fruit-flavored beer rather than a shandy. (Shandies typically have lower alcohol content, as they are usually around half beer and half lemonade or whatever not alcoholic juice or soda.)
Does it taste fruity? Most of the bigger breweries now have fruit IPAs that don’t really taste strongly of fruit: Deschutes Fresh Squeezed, Sierra Nevada Sidecar, New Belgium Citradelic.
Love Citradelic.
The lemonade IPA tasted like lemonade. No detectable alcohol taste!
There’s only one local bar I know that has Evil Twin so I’ll see if they have it next time
I just had a nice cold Kolsch last night at a restaurant with some friends. Can’t remember who made it. Damn, it was good! And super cold.
Hurry!!
Evil Twin does gypsy brewing, so once whatever is out there is gone, that’s it!!
Lovely beer, but the glasses are so small that you have to order three at once…
