I found that middle class tips best. And there are racial/cultural differences. The idea that blacks tip poorly or not at all is uncontroversial in South Florida and no black driver would disagree. The phenomenon was even mentioned in the book “Jordan rules” about the Chicago Bulls first championship season. The black players on the team, most of them millionaires, didn’t bother to tip at restaurants.

He’s been a terrible tipper his entire life. I am actively embarrassed to go out to eat with him, and now I am resolved to make sure I carry cash with me when I do so I can secretly leave a decent tip. (He will get angry and in an argument if I try to suggest he hasn’t tipped enough, so that’s why I will be doing it secretly).
The fact that you can hear jackass say “Yeah, they gave me five bucks there. Fine, outstanding African-American gentleman of the community" means nothing to you?

Let’s be clear, Monstro. You are without a doubt the most serious Negro out there. Whenever I see my Negro friends shucking and jiving, engaging in tomfoolery, or, heaven forbid, buffoonery I always tell them “Watch out! Monstro will get you.”
A $5 tip on a $15 bill is a pretty good tip. There was no reason to complain.

I’m thinking it was the coworker. Maybe it was a fake laugh? Like, in actuality he was rolling his eyes and doing the kuckoo gesture. But his ass got fired too. Too bad, so sad.
I’m a foreigner who’s just been on holiday in the US. I saw checks with amounts for 15, 18 and 20 % printed on them, and if it wasn’t printed, I’d tip about a sixth (16.6%) or, in CA, twice the tax amount. I think tax was 8.5%
I once asked a pizza delivery driver I know how much I should tip. He said 20%, with a minimum of $5.00. So a $5.00 tip is good for that small of a purchase, IMO.
I will say, I always got fast service because I was known as a good tipper, and I rarely ordered enough to tip more than $5.00. That driver can suck it.
From what I can decipher: The guy who got the $5 tip asked his buddy (a voice further away) if he was tipped at another house. His buddy said ‘nope’ and $5 guy goes into his niggerrant, calling the guy that tipped him a fine member of the black community (IOW the exception).
So he wasn’t complaining about his own tip. Just his general fuckfaced displeasure with black people.
