The three were Daisy*s, Whistles, and Bugles.
Oh man, I remember those. Your description is hardly an exaggeration. I’m not sure if I could eat a whole one of those anymore, but I don’t think I’ve lost my taste for it. I bought a variety pack of snacks for the office, and the chips and popcorn went fast, leaving a bizarre assortment of candy including Lik-M-Aid. Basically a pixie stick in a bag with a tongue depressor-shaped sweet tart to dip in the powder. Not gonna lie, it was pretty good.
Keebler used to make Swedish Creme cookies, which I idolized. I wouldn’t lust after them now, but would still eat them.
It’s not a childhood food, but early in our marriage Mrs. J. would dispose of our excess yellow crookneck squash crop by making something called Gingered Vegetable Melange, the very thought of which turns me a sickly yellow-green.
You mean those Tastykake butterscotch krimpets? Surely you don’t mean it! Tastykakes are awesome at any age. I don’t buy them more than once a year at most since they are just junk food, but when I found out I could buy them on Amazon I was thrilled (for those unfamiliar with them, they are a regional delicacy only sold in grocery stores in mid-Atlantic coastal areas; until the Internet came along I had not had one in decades).
When I was a kid Tastykakes were my parents’ - and by extension my - most luxurious treat. My dad loved krimpets, my mother adored peanut butter tandycakes. I love both.
Ah, Pixie Stix and Lik -M- Aid! I got some Pixie Stix a while back. It was depressing because there were only four flavors, and none of them were lemon or lime!
Has anyone else noticed how lime has disappeared from nearly all the candies that used to have it? SweeTarts, Life Savers, Skittles, and the little suckers from the bank- the green ones (if any) are now green apple (or worse) watermelon. At least Mike & Ikes still have lime!
I spent way too much allowance money on both of these.
I would dearly love to destroy the inside of my mouth on one of those hockey puck sized SweetTarts!
They don’t make 'em that way any more. Something called a “chewy SweetTart” is all they got now.
choking hazard?
try walmart … ours have sold tastykake products for years and yeah the PB omes dont last long
I’ve been bitching about that on here for years lol
They made it down to the New Orleans area sometime in the last 15 years or so. But I’m not sure we have the full line – can’t recall seeing butterscotch krimpets. Will keep an eye out next I go for groceries, and report back.
In Nebraska, near me, Tastykakes varieties are available through WalMarts and and our ubiquitous multi-state regional grocery chain Hy-Vee.
So many Tastykake reports from places other than the mid-Atlantic! It just goes to show, you shouldn’t believe anything I say about the US mainland, given that I lived all but four years in other countries from 1986 to 2018, and then moved to Hawai’i.
I think I’m going to order some now.
I think it was when Hostess went bankrupt and their products disappeared (temporarily) from store shelves that Tastykakes started appearing outside their original habitat.
This sounds right to me. Hostess was a mainstay down here for a long time. Smart business for Tastykake’s to move in and fill the Hostess vacuum.
Could be, I don’t see how I could have made them up. After posting, I got to thinking maybe they were called Trumpets. IIRC, Bugles and whatever were the same thing from the same maker, just different flavors or grains or something.
And speaking of Spaghetti Os, I remember my brother and I (age 8-9) being invited into a Winnebago-type vehicle while walking home from church. We we given two varieties of these spaghetti rings. I think one was a bit spicier. We gave our opinions (pretty good!) and I walked on home. My brother was never seen again.
It is the only focus group I’ve ever been a part of.

Sounds like a Roald Dahl story… ![]()
