Apparently Alex Ferguson has decided to cash in on Ronaldo and spend his money and efforts on Berbatov. Spurs will part with him for 25M. Not sure this is a good piece of business at all. Berbatov is a top class player but he’s not an out and out goal scorer which is what United need. Further, he doesn’t offer the sheer number of threats Ronaldo does.
Thoughts? Has Ferguson lost his mind or is he just accepting the inevitable that Ronaldo is gone and doing the best he can?
Real. Assuming that Ronaldo can escape from Sir Alex’s clutches.
Berbatov has a pretty good strike rate in club and international games, averaging about 1 goal every two games iirc, although his performance in a Spurs shirt is a little less than that according to Wikipedia.
The Daily Telegraph seem to think that a deal has been struck. I’ll be sorry to see him go, but holding someone who’s main motivation is to leave doesn’t make sense in the long run.
It never works in Championship Manager, that’s for sure…
I’ve never understood this urgent need for everyone to go play for Real. Most of their signings, even the ultra-expensive ones, seem to go from every-day first team players even on Champion’s League winners, to substitutes. Why would you want that?
Real seems to be perceived as the cream of the crop. They might want to prove they’re the best of the best, maybe? Or just think that their game can’t help but be improved if they practice with the Real players?
Personally, I don’t understand it; but that’s just me.
As a Red Mancunian, I have a vested interest in seeing a willing Ronaldo fulfill his contract, but as it has been said, it’s pointless keeping him if he doesn’t have his heart in it. In a way, I can almost understand why he might want to move on; after the season he just had, anything less in following seasons would have been judged as failure by some, and that kind of pressure must get on top some times.
Still, if there is any truth about him agreeing with Blatter’s comments on “foot-balling slaves”, good riddance to the nob!
Also, this wouldn’t exactly be a 1 for 1 trade-off. It’s Ronaldo for Berbatov and, like, 80 million dollars or so. That’s a lot of extra cash to throw around for someone else.
As for the “slaves” comment, that’s just asinine. No one made Ronaldo sign that contract in the first place - what, a whole year ago?!? And slaves don’t measure their weekly income in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
