Berkely's Naked Guy's Obit

From SF Gate

That’s very sad.

I remember him. Always thought the guy had a lot of guts. Sorry to hear he had it so tough.

Such a shame. I met him once, on campus. We always had to advise our visiting high-school debaters about the proper way to “not-notice” the naked fellow walking across the quad.

I was in college on the opposite coast when he made news. The general consensus was “Brave, but whacked” and no one was really surprised when he got expelled. Still, this is sad news. That kid seemed to have a lot going for him. Nice guy, too, from the linked story.

Hell, if my body were that good . . . Nahhh, not even then. Not that it wouldn’t cross my mind, though . . .

If there was ever a thread for pun to run nekkid through…

That’s why I didn’t say “Brave, but nuts”

Anyone could see that guy’s nuts.

I remember him well–I was at Cal then and used to see him (and his imitators!) every so often–and I was a bit sad, but not really surprised to see the article today. He seemed to be on a self-destructive path, from what I’ve seen in the past several years.

“Don’t dangle your patriarchy in my face!” was my friend’s comment, I remember.

Heh, that was my reaction. If I were that muscular and tanned, I might want to do it too…

Why is the date on this May 21st when he apparently killed himself Jan 10? Does it have to do with Bay to Breakers? There were fewer naked people than I expected.

Considering his later history of mental illness, maybe his naked stunt was an early manifestation of that. Perhaps if he had gotten some kind of counseling or other minimal help early on instead of encouragement in the name of free speech, he’d still be alive.

He was in police custody starting in January. He didn’t die until last week.

Maybe you’re not competent to diagnose him on the basis of his activities. There were other people who spent time on campus naked at the same time (The X-Plicit Players, for example); were they all crazy?

I’m really glad I didn’t sit in his seat in the class after his.

Wow, I remember that guy. Very sad.

He competed in judo?

No, but if that nasty nekkid act had been nipped in the bud, he’d have conformed, made the football team, become a Greek, and been the all-round big man on campus. Rah!

I heard from someone that he used to take a piece of cloth around to classes with him, and put that on the seat before he sat down. I don’t know how reliable that information is, though.

That’s pretty much standard nudist etiquette.

As he actually was treated for mental illness, the diagnosis was not mine. Maybe you’re not competent to read my post and understand it was an opinion, not a diagnosis (emphasis added):

Nowhere did I say that naked=mentally ill. And I said nothing about other people, so I have no idea why you bring them up. As to the group you mention, I’ve never heard of them. Did any of them get treated for mental illness or kill themselves?

We must have been there at the same time.

What worried me a lot more than the fact that he went around campus without clothes was that he continued to do so after he was expelled. I would have figured he would go to another school or something. A sad story.
