Bernard Cribbins Dead

Probably best known here from Dr Who, but I have a soft spot for him as the narrator of The Wombles

RIP. Check out his cameo as a house painter in “The Plank” (1979), starting at 14:13:

My favorite episode of Fawlty Towers, possibly. He was essential and played the part of annoying customer so well.

David Tennant era Doctor Who is the one I enjoyed the most. Bernard Cribbins portrayal of Wilfred was a big part of that. An extremely earnest elderly companion to a young eccentric Doctor. It was also really cool because in the 1960s when the show was only a few years old Cribbins played a young companion to Peter Cushing’s elderly Doctor in the movie Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. If you like the show it is worth a watch.

He was also in two episodes of The Avengers.

He was the joke writer murdered by the two clowns in the second.

RIP

“Sp-plplplplpl-oons, eh?”

I had no idea that Tom Campbell was the same as Mr Hutchinson.

Good rest to him.

He also recorded several novelty songs.

The Station Master in ‘The Railway Children’.

And of course ‘Right said Fred’. RIP, Bernard.

I think very actor in England was in an episode of The Avengers.

I also remember Cribbins from the 1967 Casino Royale. He’s the taxi driver who takes Mata Bond to, and from East Berlin.

I only know Bernard from Doctor Who. He always brought something special to his portrayal of Wilford Mott. He was often the oldest character in the story. He brought a different viewpoint.

93 is a good age, but still would have liked to have more. Some words from Catherine Tate and David Tennant:

Carry On, She, Dr Who multiple times, Casino Royale, The Avengers, Hitchcock, Fawlty Towers, The Plank, Coronation Street, a pop career, acclaimed performances at the National Theatre are an unsurpassable CV. And that’s all without mentioning the really iconic stuff - The Railway Children, Jackanory and The Wombles.
