Another vote for Brimstone, though it was 113 escaped souls, not 127.
It’s almost a pity John Glover went on to Smallville. I’m pretty sure no-one else could nail the Devil role as well as him.

Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future. Only 14 episodes.
Alien Nation. There were some much-later follow-up TV movies, but it really wasn’t the same.
I wish these would come out on DVD.
And while I think B5: Crusade had some problems, it should have been given more of a chance to find itself.
The Paper Chase. Yes, I know it was extended on some cable station for another season or two, but that was back before we had cable, so I’ve never gotten to see those episodes.
But on a lighter note, I’ll second Crusade, Brimstone, S:AAB and American Gothic - though not Boomtown, as technically it got a second series even though it only ran to six eps.
I’ll also add to the list Jake 2.0, Dark Skies and Prey.
Damn, I forgot Shannon’s Deal the John Sayles penned legal show with Jamie Sheridan, Elizabeth Pena and Miguel Ferrer. Only ever got to see the pilot, but it looked to be quite a fine little show.
OMG, what memories! FIREFLY, THE JOB, POLICE SQUAD, FREAKS AND GEEKS, THE CRITIC, MAX HEADROOM…
I’d like to mention the brilliant early Jason Bateman/David Garrison series IT’S YOUR MOVE. It was created for Jason by Ron Leavitt and Michael Moye, who went on a couple of years later to produce MARRIED WITH CHILDREN with a different role for their friend Garrison. I just bought a set of videos of it from E-Bay to replace my ancient ones from USA in the early 90’s. <Snoopy-like dancing!>
I’ll add another vote for Firefly. I also thought that Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca was one of the best things on TV. I don’t remember if Key West lasted more than one season, but it too is missed dearly.
Wow, I’m really glad I’m not the only one who remembers that series. It was hilarious. My favorite ep was when Matt and Norman went on the gameshow to replace the (supposedly) stolen furniture. The host kept bringing out other things the two wanted, but the other person would intentionally lose that prize, just out of spite. (Did I mention I loved that show?)
Also, I agree with American Gothic. What a wonderfully creepy series, and Gary Cole was wonderful. I comfort myself with the fact that I had enough foresight to record most of the first season.
What, no Police Squad? Only 6 eps and they were better than the movies.
My two favorites Vengeance Unlimited and Raven. I have to admit that Brimstone runs a very close third.
And they only aired two, out of order, as well as not knowing what show they bought so they kept asking kevin smith to change things.
And then put it up againest “Survivor” on one occasion and, I believe, a rather popular baseball game on the other.
Suddenly, they wonder why it’s ratings are poor and decide to cancel it, not even bothering with ther other 4 made.
I have to wonder…do these networks have clones of dilberts boss in charge of programming or something?
Two comedies in the 90’s:
Doctor Doctor with Matt Frewer.
Down Home. It was about a woman lawyer or stockbroker or something who moves back to Louisiana ti help her father.
Both of these were very funny but kept getting bounced around the schedule so much you never knew when they were on.
Also a drama on Fox. I think it was called Harsh Realm about a guy in a virtual world. I don’t know why that one failed.
The cancellation that bothered me most at the time was Battlestar Galactica (24 episodes). I was ten years old and loss has diminished somewhat. Especially since I’ve seen some of the episodes again in syndication and realized it wasn’t as good as I remembered. They brought it back briefly as Galactica 1980 (7 episodes), but it wasn’t the same.
Alien Nation and Freaks and Geeks I still miss.
Anyone remember Frank’s Place starring Tim Reid, which ran on CBS in 1987? Reid played a Boston professor who inherited a restaurant in New Orleans and ended up running the place. I was really disappointed when the show was canceled in the middle of its first season.
From memory, wasn’t that was supposed to be a new genre called “dramady”, ie a comedy with dramatic elements and no laugh track (Like Sports Night was supposed to be.)
It is disappointing to note no one has nominated that all too short lived series on A&E. in 1996. The one based on the newspaper column. the one based on the series of books. The one one inspired by the web page. The one hosted by Mike Lukas. THE STRAIGHT DOPE. the tv show.
Firefly - this is the only one I was truly pissed off about being cancelled.
Police Squad - I had them all on tape, and they WERE better than the movies. Way ahead of their time.
Proffit - I really dug this show, and was wondering what further shenanigans the guy would come up with, then it vanished.
another vote for
the redone Dark Shadows,
Firefly,
American Gothic (aka Mayberry-The Stand or The Andy-Christ-Griffith Show)
A new nomination for the goofy fun of Dark Skies
I bought the DVD just to see the unaired episodes. Good stuff!
What about “Bosom Buddies?” Here’s a show with Holland Taylor, Thelma Hopkins, Donna Dixon, Wendy Jo Sperber, Peter Scolari and * Tom Hanks* that only had a two year run?
The Ropers.
Nostalgia, so back off! Though anyone younger than 20 will have almost no chance of remembering this gem.
