Best Action Movie 1991-2010: Round 1 Voting (this time with poll)

The nominations are in!

A few movies that I deemed dramas or talky action movies or war movies were dropped. My apologies to fans of Gladiator, Leon, Kill Bill: Volume 2 and others.

For Round 1, vote for any and all titles that you believe are “The Best Action Movies of 1991-2010.” The highest vote getters (likely the top 15, perhaps more or less if there’s a clear divide between the biggest votegetters) will move on to the one vote-one winner Round 2.

Voting closes on Friday at Noon.

And by Friday at Noon, I mean Saturday at Noon.

There were several good movies that I skipped over, in favor of the ones I considered actually great. I enjoyed all the superhero movies on the list, for instance, but none of the others was really on the same level as The Dark Knight.

I waffled over The Fifth Element, but ultimately, it’s really much better enjoyed as a comedy than as an action movie (even though I’m pretty sure that’s not what was intended).

Well, crap, I voted before noting that multiple selections were allowed, so if I weren’t such a nincompoop I would have nominated T2: Judgement Day, The Matrix, Ronin, and Snatch in addition to my top pick, Inception.

In retrospect, I’m surprised Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon wasn’t nominated - I’d have given it a vote in the prelim round, though I doubt it would have gone all the way. Also forgot to click on T2, but oh well, it seems to be doing okay.

It was nominated. It was DQed under the “not really an action movie because it’s actually a drama” rule.

I don’t much want to argue your criteria, but how the heck are you giving Braveheart a pass while disallowing Gladiator?

I know. I realized that after the poll went live. But Braveheart is struggling in the voting already, so it probably won’t even make the finals.

At this stage it looks like 9-12 films will make it to the next level. Using a 20-25% or better criterion. Even fewer if you’re more picky.

Thanks for including Hero, though. It’s the better film, IMHO, and deserves a vote for the arrow scene alone.

Oops. I did the same thing!

I actually prefer Mummy II to the first movie.

Has anyone nominated The Last Boy Scout? Is it too late?

I love that movie!

Here’s how things look after 48 voters with the obvious lag-behinds stripped off

O.K., seriously, people who haven’t seen Shoot 'em Up need to see it and watch it 100 times.

Righteous movie! I’m in love with Monica Bellucci!

I can’t believe that Speed is getting so few votes. I know it’s been a while since it came out, but it’s a great movie. It’s not T2 or anything, but it’s really very good.

True, and while we’re at it, not a single shot of love for Timecop? Damn, people.

I didn’t vote for Demolition Man because it’s more of a comedy lightly satirizing action flicks, but for the record, it is the greatest movie of our time, nay, all time. I consider it a classic of the Saturday Afternoon Movie genre (see also, Galaxy Quest and Big Trouble in Little China).

Speed is moving up in the world (I know I voted for it), but Timecop is still lagging behind with a 0. Equilibrium is the only other 0 (and well deserved in my opinion, it blew).
