I have a friend coming into town, and we want to have some cold beers at the hot tub. The complex rules say sensibly, “No glassware aound the pool/hottub.” So what’s the best beer we can get in an aluminum can? I suppose a plastic bottle or cardboard box would also qualify.
First priority is availability, since I want to be drinking tomorrow evening. So an obscure microbrewery label from from Arkansas really won’t be much help.
I’m not big on beer. If left to my own devices I’d probably buy some MJD. But I gotta figure there’s something better. What do you suggest?
I don’t know your price range, but IMHO the best “cheap” beer out there is just plain old Budweiser. If you want to go a little higher, Heineken is now in a can also. I agree with brujo that Guiness is a great beer but most people that aren’t “big on beer” tend not to like it.
To get a little off track, I wouldn’t get Coors Lt or Miller Lt. If all you want is water there will be plenty in the hot tub, just bring a glass, scoop, and enjoy!
Get Miller. When I lived overseas, it was the only American beer that consistently made the international beer ratings.
Or just get Blatz. (Is it still around?) The hot tub will cover up the extra bubbles but not the smell.

Is the Pub still the State Street dive? Is Jingles still there?
</hijack>
Duckster, Jingles is still there. Is the Pub the place at the top of Francis St. with the red exterior? If so, it’s still there. Like I say, I’m not big on beer.
Sam Stone, I realize that’s pretty much exactly what I’m asking.
Heineken has a good reputation in the US? Wow. I know it’s decent in the Netherlands, but in the UK it’s regarded as only one step up from (ugh) Skol or XXXX.
Grolsch in cans is actually the non-export stuff! Don’t be faked by the beautiful flip-tops, they’re export. As skot says, the cans are the way to go, if you can find them.
Around Chicago there is a beer brewed in the old Old Style brewery in LaCrosse, WI called LaCrosse Lager. As far as cheap, decent beer for sucking down during the game or whatever - it gets my vote.
After Miller bought G. Heilemann (sp?) brewing and Old Style, they started brewing Old Style in Milwaukee and stopped fully krausening it.
I’ll admit I actually could taste the difference. LaCrosse continues the krausening tradition. The flavor has a kind of sentimental value for me.
What are you guys looking at? I am a cheap beer connoiseur and I like to stay fully krausened.
Hic!
gimme a P!!! gimme a B!!! gimme an R!!! what does that spell ??? P-B-R!!!
hijack-- we had a beer addled adult soapbox derby in town the other day
‘‘Perhaps the most specifically beer-driven entrant is Tall Boy Racer, which resembles a large can of PBR — and even packs a keg in the rear, complete with tap and padded bar for the crew when it’s in the pits.’’
i thought that was pretty cool, but not cool enough for it’s own thread --end hijack
