I once made a four hour round trip just to get a Backyard Burger, FWIW.
Hmm. Decisions, decisions.
Rally’s (at least in the Memphis area, but perhaps elsewhere) just got bought out by Checker’s, so they are no more. Didn’t think that much of the burger I had from there: edible, but nothing great.
Sonic is all right, but I prefer their grilled chicken (with extra honey mustard).
Out of the typical fast food, I prefer Burger King, but that isn’t saying much.
Fuddrucker’s is the place I think is overall best: espically with their jalapeno cheese sauce added. (Too bad there aren’t any near me!)
In-n-Out I also like, a close second to Fuddrucker’s. (Again, too bad there aren’t any around here.)
Fatburger is just behind In-n-Out. (Ditto.)
Although, a new contender has arisen: Cheeburger Cheeburger. Gotta love a place that’ll let you put sundrided tomatoes and garlic on your burger. Or artichoke hearts and BBQ sauce.
<< Two’s complement. Three’s a crowd. >>
HARVEY’S! The HECK you say.
I submit to you in Winnipeg (Canada) It’s VJ’s (used to be Juniors)
MMMMM Fatboy with Cheese (no chili) cheese and a big box of fries (actual box, like a half shoe box)
Gee, thanks. Now I have that stupid song stuck in my head. At least it knocked out the one that had been living in there for the past couple of days: William Shatner singing “Rocketman.” :shiver:
Any idea which freeway you’re talking about? I could make a “scientific inquiry” for you. And do you mean this Flakey Jake’s (which I’ve never heard of) or Fuddrucker’s? I know of some Fudds around the area.
Oh, and my vote goes to In-and-Out.
I saw him do that on The First (and only, as it turned out) Science Fiction Film Awards (or something like that). He was wearing a tux, sitting on a stool on an empty stage, and smoking a cigarette.
I don’t remember the freeway. I went to Orange County to work, and then went home to L.A. I remember we left the office (near The Block) and went up… Lewis? After that I think we took a left on Chapman and then a right at the Wienerschnitzel (Haster?). They did a lot of road construction up there (what else is new?) and Flakey Jake’s was sort of standing alone in a big dirt field.
So, those of you who have In N Out, Fat Burger, Sonic, Jack In The Box, and so on in your area, is that in addition to Burger King, Wendys and McDonalds, or instead of? Because the only ones in this area are the three I mentioned - It’s been well over 20 years since Jack In The Box left the north east, and as far as I know, none of the others have ever been in this area. There used to be a chain called Magic something (Chef or Burger) but they disappeared a couple of decades ago too.
Of the very few options we have, I like Burger King the best. The burgers are nice, and unlike McDonalds and Wendys, the fries don’t suck. much. Why is it that burger places (at least these three) only sell shoestring style fries? I don’t like them nearly as much as crinkle cut or steak fries.
When I was in L.A. it was in addition. JITB, BK, Carl’s Jr., Rally’s, In-N-Out, Fatburger, A&W, Wienerschnitzel, Del Taco, Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Tommy’s, plus any number of quasi-chains and one-offs.
Things are different up here near the Canadian border. No Carl’s Jr. The nearest Wienerschnitzel is 40 miles away from me. No Del Taco. No In-N-Out. No Fatburger .
It’s pretty much just in Colorado, but Good Times gets my vote.
Yes, there are McDonalds and Burger Kings all over the place - it is just that when you live here, those two chains are not even in the running compared to the others. I read that they are beginning to realize the fact and that some McDonalds have actually closed - something unheard of in the past. The only people I know who still go to McDonalds or BK are those with little kids who want the happy meals - otherwise, I seriously don’t know a single adult who would go there unless it was too far to drive to a Fatburger or In-N-Out.
Hardee’s has completely turned their business model around. Their (relatively) new Thickburgers are absolutely fantastic. Definitely my fave fast-food burger.
On the east coast, I’ve never been to a Fatburger or an In N Out, so I can have no opinion. As for Fudrucker’s and 5 Guys, they have decent burgers but not really worth what you have to pay for them… although I will go there occasionally. Wendy’s burgers and Hardee’s thickburgers are good enough and a lot cheaper. Even the BK burgers are ok.
What happened to Rax? Ha!
Anyway, my roommate was a lover of Culvers. As Omni just mentioned, Culvers Butterburgers are great.
I mention my roomate because he once came into my bedroom asking if I wanted to go to Culvers with him. I said no. Several minutes after I heard him return to the apartment, I walked out into the living room and said, “how’s your butterburger?”
He, in a hypnotic-like trance with bloodshot eyes, replies slowly, in an almost monotone voice, “i can taste the butter” (as I notice a slight but pleasant grin spread across his face before he took another bite).
Screw this burger nonsense, let’s get back to the Forbidden Zone hijack!
I may still have the VHS copy I stole from a video store in the late 1980’s… I think they charged my mom’s credit card about $80 for it!
Witch’s Egg was my favorite song for years!
Ah, perhaps the problem is that you are confusing one of the many Tommy’s imitator’s found around LA. The real one is Original Tommy’s, with the trademark shack. Mind you, the most important aspect is a high turnover rate, or else the chili starts to congeal. Therefore, the best stand is the original one on Beverly and Rampart which also has the world’s fastest service.
Another pretty killer chiliburger is The Hat but I still consider Tommy’s to be superior. The Hat has good pastrami also, though.
The Hat has a great burger, cooked to order, and some dynamite fries. Never order a large unless you are really hungry. The regular order of chili-cheese fries serves four!
White Castle. Mmm, onions!!
(Why are all the Chicago White Castles either in crappy neighborhoods or way far out? They closed the one at Milwaukee and Armitage. Why don’t they have a location in the Loop?)
Five Guys refuses to cook its burgers anything less than well done. Is there something about their meat supply that they’re not telling us?
I have the soundtrack CD, too.

Yes, I was making a reference to the imitators.
I’ve been to the one on Beverly & Rampart. Carnie’s was more convenient for me though.

Steak and Shake! Yum.
Yes. Yes.
