Although, a new contender has arisen: Cheeburger Cheeburger. Gotta love a place that’ll let you put sundrided tomatoes and garlic on your burger. Or artichoke hearts and BBQ sauce.

The choices of toppings there are nice, as are the shakes (if you order right), but the burger itself, IMO, is no great shakes.

Might be a bit dependent on the franchise: the one in Memphis isn’t half-bad. (Better than the typical fast-food burgers, although not the best overall. Still, excepting local places that serve burgers, it’s about the best of the options available to me. What I wouldn’t do for a Fuddruckers…)

Ah, perhaps the problem is that you are confusing one of the many Tommy’s imitator’s found around LA. The real one is Original Tommy’s, with the trademark shack. Mind you, the most important aspect is a high turnover rate, or else the chili starts to congeal. Therefore, the best stand is the original one on Beverly and Rampart which also has the world’s fastest service.

One particular problem for Tommy’s over the years, has been protecting the name. Many profit-hungry imitators have copied key elements of the operation, trying to cash in on the original’s fame. Unfortunately, by copying the sign and menu, some customers have been confused at one time or another. This issue has been the subject of many legal battles. About the quality of the food

The ingredients are of the highest quality, including 100% beef patties and hot dogs, double-thick slices of real cheese, fresh chopped onions, hand-sliced beef steak tomatoes, pickles and mustard. They are not kidding about portion size. I have watched the employees slice tomatos. An extra large tomato = 4 slices each at least 1/2" thick. Look at the thickness of the tomato in this picture
As far as the speed of service goes

The limited menu allows the speed of service to be unsurpassed in the industry. In the original location, the average service time during a rush period is about 15 seconds.

This is no BS, I have taken guests there and timed them.

So is Tommy’s the ultimate burger? Depends. If I what Chili then yes. If I don’t want chili then probably the nod goes to In and out. If I want to sit inside probably Fudds. If I am out of town and stuck with doing a chain, then it’s Carl’s Jr. (Hardees on the east coast. Hardees thickburger = Carl’s $6 burger)
Burgerville is good, but their patties are not thick enough.
