I know I have seen this before, but I searched the archives, but noting came up.
Here is my story: My brother is turning 13 and loves car chases. For his birthday I am going to make a DVD with nothing but the “best” car chases.
Here is where I need help: I know of some excellent car chases, ie Builtt, Ronin, The French Connection and the orginial “Gone in 60 seconds”, but I am looking for some more.
(They do need be rather easy to find and must be on a DVD)
Walter Hill’s The Driver should fit the bill nicely.
For ‘real life’ stuff, how about the Getaway in Stockholm series? I bought the first 2 from Amazon for self-indulgent “guilty pleasure” reasons, and wasn’t disappointed.
Every time this subject comes up, I have to remind people of Rendezvous, and every time I am largely ignored.
It was made in the mid-70’s by Claude Lelouch, who bolted a camera to the front bumper of a Ferrari and drove flat-out across Paris in the early morning. No closed streets, no permits; when the movie was first shown, he was arrested.
Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t live up to the stories surrounding it. It’s quite dark and grainy, so you can’t really see the looks on the pedestrians faces. (I only have the VHS release, a recent DVD version is supposed to be much, much cleaner.) But serious car-movie buffs speak of this film in hushed tones, and rumors still abound about who the actual driver was.
Also, The Italian Job (the original, not the recent remake)
