So I’m devoting a feature display area in my vidstore to the best DVD releases of 2007. Note: this is 1/1/07 - 12/31/07 DVD release dates, not theatrical release dates.
Therefore, such first-time DVD releases as* Ace in the Hole* and 3:10 to Yuma (1957) are eligible.
Any teeming opinionators want to help me populate my list? I figure I’ll choose 50 titles. It’s just I’ve watched so many movies this year that I need reminders of what all I’ve seen, know’m sayin?
Here’s my seed list, as they occur to me, no ranking implied, subject to replacement by their betters.
Shooter
The Tripper
Rescue Dawn
Ace in the Hole
Sylvia Scarlett
Idiocracy
Blood Monkey
Zodiac
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
History Boys
Old Joy
Killer of Sheep
Superbad
Grindhouse (both features)
Pan’s Labyrinth
Inland Empire
The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Harsh Times
Planet Earth (doc series)
I Think I Love My Wife
(And yes, one of those is a joke, but I couldn’t help myself; store-staff’s favorite bad movie of the year.)
Three releases for which I had been waiting a very long time:
-Becket. LOVE this movie. Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton are phenomenal.
-Days of Heaven. One of the most visually stunning movies of all time.
-Blade Runner (Ultimate Edition). About bloody time. One of my all-time favourite movies. It has been ever since I first saw it as a 12 year-old during it’s first run. It was just me and only 2 other guys in the entire theatre and I was completely transported. Definitely one of the defining movie experiences of my life. I’ve owned several different versions of the various cuts of this movie over the years, so I’m really looking forward to having them all in one convenient package.
And thanks for the heads-up about Ace in the Hole! I had no idea it had finally gotten a DVD release. Added to my Amazon wish list.
I gotta give a nod to Warner Home Video’s Popeye the Sailor Volume 1: 1933-1938, one of the best- if not the best- classic cartoon DVDs out there. These cartoons still stand up, the Technicolor two-reelers are beauties, and the special features are the icing on the spinach-flavored cake.
If you want a (literally) non-stop action film, there’s Crank which looks fantastic if you have an HD version. No plot or acting, but lots ‘n’ lots o’ action.
