I’ve gotten hooked on “One Big Happy.” Some of the things the kids say in the strip sound just like my own kids. In fact, my kids read it and they think it’s funny, too.
Get Fuzzy is one I truly like… It’s one of the few where you feel that the artist is truly trying to create something unique and humorous. Unlike, say, Hi and Lois, Hagar the Horrible, Garfield, Blondie…
Mutts is another great one. Very different style of humor, something quite unique and heartfelt.
Foxtrot seems to have by far the best grasp of contemporary humor out of all the normal comic strips. The artist also tends to be able to use Geek humor far more adeptly than any other strip attempting jokes about computers, save for perhaps Dilbert. And I always enjoy the strips involving physics, since the author actually knows what he’s talking about (Bill Amend is a physics major).
Of course, there are the classics (Calvin and Hobbes, Far Side, etc…) Zits, Stone Soup, and a few others are doing well too.
But our comics page could do with some MAJOR pruning.
Zippy the Pinhead and The Boondocks are the only currently running comics that kick ass. Bloom County, Pogo, and the early Doonesbury were all really good. [sub]When did Doonesbury start to suck?[/sub]
Another Fox Trot fan here. That, along with Dilbert, are the 2 that still hold my attention.
I am trying to stay with Doonesbury, but somehow it has taken a wrong turn. I don’t know that I can really describe it other than to think that it is a caricature of it’s past. The scenarios are a little much, the stances and messages are a little off, the characters aren’t as believable. It’s just sort of off.
I’m a big fan of Non Sequitor, Doonesbury and Boondocks. My favorite current strip is For Better or For Worse, and Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side are my favorite past strips.
I’ve always liked For Better or For Worse. I don’t know why, exactly, but I do. I’ve watched those characters grow up, and now I’m sort of attached to them. The recent strips where Liz met the helicopter pilot on the bus… I was so happy for her. Then I realized that I needed to get a life.
I pretty much agree with everyone else: Zits, Mutts, Fox Trot, Get Fuzzy
That strip is everything I used to love about Dilbert before he got permanently wedged into his cubicle. (although I still enjoy Dilbert quite a bit)
And Sherman’s Lagoon is hilarious as well.
And I’ll echo the votes for Fox Trot and Zits. Get Fuzzy has its moments, but has become a bit monotonous with this “Bucky vs. the Ferret” thing that’s dragged for two months.
It’s a toss-up between Calvin and Hobbes and the Farside. If you’re going to make me choose a strip that isn’t retired, I think I’ll have to go with McGruder’s The Boondocks.
As many others have mentioned, Calvin and Hobbes and Bloom County/Outland are two wonderful “classics.” Also, Peanuts and some older Garfield strips are great.
As far as current strips, For Better or for Worse is, IMO, at least a head above the rest, although Foxtrot and Dilbert are also pretty funny. Honorable mention goes to Doonesbury.
The only ones I’ve been following regularly are FoxTrot, Dilbert, and Frazz, but I’m also fond of Non Sequitur and Funky Winkerbean / Crankshaft, but the last two might just be because they’re set in Cleveland.
For retired comics, of course, there’s Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, and Bloom County (Outland wasn’t worth bothering with).
I rather like 9 Chickweed Lane. I also enjoy For Better or For Worse, Get Fuzzy, Frazz, and The Boondocks.
I am sick unto death of Garfield. And Baldo and Mr. Potato Head make me want to take my copies of the Orange County Register down to Grand Avenue and ask for my money back.
