I always wondered if they didn’t get it from somewhere else first. It doesn’t seem particularly funny without some other (unknown to me) context behind it.
I personally prefer where this line is fully translated into English as “My white plume.” Most English speakers are only aware of the first meaning of “panache” which refers to a grand or flamboyant manner. What Cyrano really meant was his symbol of incorruptible courage (as explained in the previous act that took place during the war). His best attribute was integrity, not style. So for me “My white plume” is a much better last line than “My panache.”
