I don’t know where we’re going, but we’re making great time.

A quote from Winston Churchill at the end of the film The Battle of Britain, appearing on the screen as the glorious, uplifting end title music swells to a climax:

“This is not the end, or even the beginning of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning.”

Changed my whole opinion of the man.

“There’s nothing in the middle of the road but yellow stripes and dead armadillos.”

Dom - There’s Something about Mary

My father used to say:

“Ha ha, lachte de graaf op zijn Spaans, daar hij geen Nederlands kende, hetgeen een zeer goede opmerking was.”

Translation from the Dutch: “Ha ha, chuckled the count in Spanish, as he didn’t speak any Dutch, which was a very good point.”

I often quote my father and always get lots of blank looks. but I think it is beautiful. A google search threw up multiple hits for “Ha ha, chuckled the count in Spanish”, followed by all sorts of non-sequiturs (my fave: “And he threw his suntanned false teeth on the table”), though not my father’s version. Origin appears to be unknown.

Hope and change. Change you can believe in. (shrug)
