Actually, with a little bit of effort, you can too quote from a closed thread. Like this:
ETA: Okay, I see a minor glitch there. In manhattan’s original post, the word I is italicized in “I am the fucking hall monitor” and that little font change got lost. Still, basically, you can do it. Who’da thunk it?
Okay, I see Monty approximately figured this out too, just a little ahead of me! Just giving credit where credit is due. Note, though, that there’s something just a little bit, uh, odd about Monty’s quotes: They don’t look quite normal. Can you see what’s different there?
Also: Normally when you click on the little arrow to view the original post, you get a page with the entire thread (or one page thereof), but positioned to the post in question. When you click on Monty’s funky little arrows, you get a page showing only that one post.
Monty, you’re really really close to getting it right. Just one little extra step to get the link to the original post so that the whole thread shows instead of just the one post (but positioned to the post in question), and a few extra steps to make the little arrow look and work like the real thing.
(On preview: I see on preview that cochrane has a comment on this, but I’ll go ahead and post this now, then read what cochrane has to say.)
Okay, I take it from this comment that you know the trick too. Maybe everybody does? Hey, I just figured it out myself, so that made me think I’m spiffy smart! Yeah, you’re right, it’s just a bit of a PITA to do. I wouldn’t even think of doing fancy stuff like that on an iPhone.
Note also that Monty got a quote-within-a-quote there too. (ETA: It’s up in Post #11, FYI.) A lot of Dopers know how to do that too, because I see it done a lot. But yeah, it is something of a PITA.
