Best Pazz & Jop Critics Poll Album 2003

Kind of a weird year - I like the Shins album, but mostly it’s one great song and a bunch of other decent-to-good songs; at this point, Radiohead, for me, was kind of turning into U2, so they’re out. I like Cat Power and The New Pornographers, but this year I’m going to have to side with the critics and go for Outkast - it’s a great album, even if you’re sick of “Hey Ya”.

I love Elephant by the White Stripes - solid top to bottom.

Welcome Interstate Managers by Fountains of Wayne is an excellent album - the fact that Stacy’s Mom is off of it is fine, but that is one of the weaker tracks. Each is a great little power pop short story.

Lots of albums I like here. I don’t think there’s a single one here I don’t like (except I’m not that familiar with Hail to the Thief–I had lost interest in Radiohead by then.) I ended up, too, siding with the critics with Outkast. However, of the bunch, The New Pornographers’ Electric Version is the one that gets the most play at chez pulykamell (I’m hoping to vote for them in 2005, but that depends on the field.)

Hail to the Thief for me - I liked the burst of anger and the energy, it was something different from them.

Welcome Interstate Managers has seven or eight of the best opening tracks on any album from that decade, but man did a lot of dreck get added to the back end of that album.

One more thing I should add–that New Pornographers album, actually all the New Pornographers albums, has some of my favorite rock drumming of the 21st century in Kurt Dahle. I’m so sad he left the band. :frowning: I saw them last month and, while they were great as always and the new drummer is more than good, it just didn’t feel the same without his feel.

I voted Hail To The Thief, but it was hard not to pick Decoration Day.

An excellent year – I’m happily surprised. Went with Outkast, but could have picked any of the others I’m reasonably familiar with (about half the list) with no regrets.

White Stripes got my vote previously, so this time it is OutKast.

Tough decision. I went with the Black Album. Great songs on it, and I loved how Jay-Z released a vinyl version with just the vocals to allow for remixes which produced one of my favs, The Gray Album.
