Best recent nicknames in sports

There was an older 2009 thread about baseball nicknames, but I didn’t want to revive that one and I’m really more interested in recent players.

My nomination is Boston Red Sox prospect Jhostynxon The Password Garcia.

Running back AJ Dillon (former Packer, now with the Eagles) is known as “Quadzilla” and “The Quadfather,” due to his impressive upper legs.

No idea if this is a true Bermanism but it sure has his style: former Phillies outfielder Aaron “the Fresh Prince of” Altherr (pronounced all-TAIR), last seen playing in Mexico last year.

“Wi-Fi”, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj.

His name is like a default password for an internet router.

NBA sportscaster Richard Jefferson has coined the nickname “The Moment” for Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton. I like it.

“The Password” just finished second to a fella known as “The Iowa Meat Truck” in a poll of “best nicknames in minor league baseball*.” Other contenders included “Lord Tubbington,” “The Ice Cream Man” (a player called Hagen Danner in the Reds system) and “The Canadian Cannon.”

I voted for the Meat Truck myself. “The Password” is good but a bit too reminiscent of a couple of earlier nicknames for players with hard-to-spell names: Doug “Eye Chart” Gwosdz, a catcher who spent several years with the Padres, and Marc “Scrabble” Rzepczynski, who pitched for the Jays, Cardinals, and several other teams. I actually like those ones better, though “The Password” is more in keeping with the times.

*Thus far The Password has been unable to find the right combination to unlock access to a steady job in the major leagues. He may have to change his to find success.
