Best Song Ever

Nightswimming by REM.

Only passing through - Mac Macanally

1952 Vincent Black Lightning - Richard Thompson
Somebody That I Used to Know - Gotye
John Doe No. 24 - Mary Chapin Carpenter

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division is the best song ever.

Good choice. “Man On The Moon” is another great REM song.
You also have to include some Warren Zevon:
“Lawyers, Guns And Money”
“Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner”
“Desperados Under The Eaves”

“Lazy River” by Hoagy Carmichael

The most beautiful pop song ever (I said it before):

The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset

“Stay” by Pink Floyd from the criminally underplayed “Obscured by Clouds”

Not what most people would consider typical Floyd but it is simple, gentle and beautiful. You can’t hear that final wah-wah solo without a little smile on your face.

If we’re talking pop, there’s nothing I’ve ever heard that comes close to Common People by Pulp.

Blue Skies, Irving Berlin.

If you’re digging “The Greatest Discovery” right now, how 'bout “Isn’t She Lovely,” by Stevie Wonder.

Understand I am a primarily a metal/rock dude… but the correct answer is:

Rhapsody in Blue.

I can’t come up with a definitive answer at this time, but can I veto someone else’s choice?

Probably “Tumbling Dice” by the Rolling Stones

or

“Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin

“California Stars” by Wilco

Not familiar with that - can you hum a few bars?

That’s a good one. One of my favorite bands. For perfect pop song, I would go with “Septembur Girls” by Big Star. Or, for something a little more acoustic and sweetly notalgic: Thirteen by the same band.

Walk by the Foo Fighters. Won a Grammy for Best Rock Song last nigh.

The two best songs ever:

Song to the Siren - Tim Buckley
Song to the Siren (Monkees TV Show 1968) - Tim Buckley

We surely seem to have a similar musical taste, I love Big Star and especially those two songs.
